Univision Buying WLIR

The Morey Organization has sold the rights to the 92.7 FM frequency, home to the WLIR radio station, to Spanish-language media giant Univision for $60 million in cash, the companies said today.

Under terms of the deal, Morey will retain the WLIR call letters, the station's staff and its modern rock format, and it plans to transfer everything to a new frequency by January, said company spokeswoman Gina DeGregorio. Although the company owns three other stations -- WXXP/105.3 FM, WDRE/98.5 FM and the 107.1 FM frequency, which it had been using to simulcast WLIR to East End listeners -- it's looking for a new frequency to house WLIR, DeGregorio said. 'Our die-hard listeners on Long Island are still going to have their heritage radio station,' she said.

Meanwhile, Univision will likely convert the frequency to a Spanish-language format, although a company spokeswoman said she was unsure what it would do. Long Island has no FM Spanish-language stations.

The deal is scheduled to be completed early next year and is probably not subject to the Federal Communications Commission's media ownership rules because Univision's presence in the New York market is minimal.

LIR is my favorite station! I'll be so sad if it moves - I've listened to it for years and years and years. They went off the air once in the 80's for a few days and I was so depressed. No where else to hear all the old 80's new wave!

I really hope they don't change the format and music of the station. That's my favorite station and I've been listening to it since I was a teenager. It's the only place where I can listen to Depeche Mode.

They better not change the format I used to listen to 104.1 , I went on vac. for a week and now its a rap station!
Now all I can tolerate is LIR! I've always listened to it since High School.
I wonder if they have a petition?

All hope for NY radio will be lost if they change LIR's format. I don't turn my radio on until I get close enough to the Island to hear it!!

I just hope nothing happens to 98.5, the BONE. It's the only decent thing on the radio anymore. Although you can't get it west of route 110 yet. They're owned by DRE.
