We were afraid of not meeting our minimum so we invited everyone with a guest (except kids).
They shouldn't be scrounging around for a date if you didn't invite them '& Guest'. But if you did invite them '& Guest' then you can't blame them for wanting to bring someone.
Totally agree.
If you already invited them with a guest, you cannot turn around and be annoyed if they actually bring one.
I do think it's rude to just grab any date and bring it to a wedding when you know plenty of people at the wedding... but if someone is invited with a guest, you gave them that option.

Re: Unwanted Plus Ones
I have the same problem... a few ppl who are not dating anyone seem to wanna bring a guest just for the heck of it...but we are broke and can't allow that, so we are just allowing anyone with a SO to bring a +1.
I like the idea of calling ahead of time to get the names so we know they won't bring just anyone!

These were our criteria for inviting someone with a guest:
1. They are in the Bridal Party 2. They have a significant other 3. They will not know anyone (or very few people) at the wedding
So far it's working out well. I haven't had any complaints. Guests wanting to bring their children is proving to be a much larger issue!

Because of our budget and the amount of people invited, we unfortunately cannot afford to invite completely single people with a guest.

We are only inviting people in a serious relationship with a date. However, all my friends know each other so that's why we decided it wouldn't be uncomfortable for people to come alone. If the person did not know anyone I would invite them with a date.
I agree with this.

Re: Unwanted Plus Ones
yes..... everyone will be offered to bring a date, even if they are VERY single.
my reasoning also comes from past experiences. While in grad school I was single for several years. At weddings, everyone couples up and dances with their partner. Even though I knew dozens of people, I felt left out, becuase everyone was paired up and I was by myself. What should a person do in that situation? Push into a couple dancing and make it a thresome? No way. Those were long receptions.... and made me blissfully aware of my personal sacrifices for my career.... and basically made me sad....
So, everyone is invited to bring someone, basically to keep them company!

Im calling people before invites go out (like cousins for example) and seeing if they are dating anyone. And if so, I want the persons first and last name. Then I will invite them together. If they are not seeing anyone, I will invite them alone. I have a friend who was invited to a wedding with a date and she was not seeing anyone. She rsvped with a date and ended up going alone. We are tight on our numbers so Im not putting up with stuff like that. If you can't tell me the dates name, they are not invited. I am not writing 'and guest' on anything at my wedding. i find it impersonal and somewhat rude.
I'm doing the same...i completely agree

This is exactly what we're doing. I'm shocked, but the kid thing hasn't been a problem... yet.

We are inviting everyone with a guest. Even though we are on somewhat of a budget...instead of inviting those people your not sure that you need to invite...we are giving the people we really want there the option to bring someone. Most people I know chose to go alone if they aren't dating someone anyway...but the option is nice to have.

We invited everyone with a date. I would hate to go to a wedding alone whether I was with someone or not, so I didn't want to put anyone else through that.

Re: Unwanted Plus Ones
Nope -- we're only inviting people who are engaged or married with dates (or people we KNOW have been dating for a considerable amount of time). Anyone who isnt really dating anyone, isnt being invited with a guest.
