(UPDATED and MUCH MUCH BETTER!!!) Anyone Besides Me Having Serious Problems with HIS family? (VENT)

I give up. I really don't know what to do anymore about his family. We just don't get along at all. For the last 6 years, I have tried my best to fit in, and it just hasn't worked.

A few months ago, I posted how they were trying to get me to purchase new favors and I refused to give in. Well, I finally made up with his aunt (I had to apoligize to her even though I did nothing wrong. SHe has always been very good to us, and I felt badly that I somehow managed to hurt her feelings...). However, I have yet to speak to him mother. I spoke to his aunt who said his mother really wanted to smooth things over. I am petrified of this woman, and I told Brian that I wanted to have him with me when I had to speak with her. Well, I made plans with Brian's aunt and sister to go to see Chateau Briand tomorrow and out to dinner. As far as I knew, things were better. I spoke to her on the phone today briefly, and about two hours later, I went outside and she was talking to her friend on the steps. Brian's motehr was at teh window, and her boyfriend was also outside. I said hello to everyone (Just a quick hello) and I ran to the car so I could start it and wait for Brian who I knew would be out in a few seconds.

*****PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT IT IS 30 DEGREES OUTSIDE, AND MY HAIR WAS WET! I HAVE NO MAKE UP ON, I AM WEARING A SWEATPANTS, A FLEECE AND A DOWN COAT****

Well, Brian comes out, BS's with them for a minute and gets in teh car. First thing he says was why didn't you wait outside with them? I'm freezing and I knew you woudl be right out. Well you are going to have to talk to them at some point, Laurie...

WTF?????

Um, it's freezing! Next, I get defensive.

'WHY? DID THEY HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT IT?' No...it's just obvious that you were avoiding them...

WHATEVER! WE ARE GOING TO LOOK FOR TUXES AND I AM GOING TO IGNORE THAT COMMENT....

We are in teh store, phone rings...it's his sister. He walks away for a second, and comes back all po'd. I ignore him assuming it's because we had already done this whole tux shopping thing and he was annoyed that I changed stores on him.

Phone rings again. He walks outside and I see him yelling at his sister. I finish up, go outside and he starts yelling at me about how much trouble I have caused by acting like a baby, and his aunt is crying because I was ignoring her and his miotehr is so pissed taht I was so rude and didn't stand outside (in this freezing weather) to BS with them...

Now mind you, these are women that normally sit outside to BS about EVERYONE AND GOSSIP ABOUT EVERYONE on teh block. 50 year old women talking abouy everyone elses business but their own. They make me sick. I am nothing liek that and yes it bothers me and I try to avoid these conversations as much as possible, but I WAS FREEZING!!! If I wanted to avoid them, when I heard them outside, I would have waited for them to a) Eitehr leave or b) would have walked out with Brian and made a formal announcement that i was cold and went to sit in the car.

SO I told him today that if every day of my life is going to be scrutinized by his family as it has been for the last 6 years, I don't think this will work. I am not a shy person, I am not unfriendly, I am not stuck up or a snob. However, I am also not two faced and I will not sit and gossip with them about all of their friends. Ezpecially today, when it is 30 degrees out and my hair is still wet!

HELP ME PLEASE? I NEED ADVICE!

I had problems with my husbands family .... Things have gotten a little better... I dont know what to tell you except, your FH NEEDS to be on your side... After the two of you are married-- THATS your family-- Yeah you have your parents, and extended family, but hte only ones you EVER need to be held accountable with is EACH OTHER. Right now it seems like his family has him with a tight hold. ( sorry Groom-to-be) But, seriously, you need to make sure you and him are on the same team. As soon as I told that to my Husband (FH at the time) He took a stand!

Good Luck! Let me know how things go!
(PS-- I wouldn't have stayed outside if my hair was wet either!)

He defends me to them, and he defends them to me. I just can't deal with all of this...

I think you know my deal.

Time heals all wounds. Its been a long battle but in time the pain does go away.

I think if you truly went into the car for that reason then you have nothing to worry about. But I know sometimes I make excuses for my behavior when I know deep down that I did it for other reasons. If that is the case, I would tell FI that 'after reflecting on the incident, you realized that it was probably that you feared feeling uncomfortable around them? Maybe that will smooth things over. Sorry.

sweetie I am so sorry you are still going through this ongoing BS. I agree with 2003oct10. He needs to be by your side 100%, whether the family is there or not, he needs to show 100% support to them and to you. he should respect his family, but not disrespect his future wife. He/You are eachothers new family, getting ready to start your own family. they need to learn to let go and let you 2 be happy. I am sure the whole cold/car thing was innocent. I do stuff like that all the time and mean nothing insulting by it.

just talk to your FH and let him know your feelings and what is bothering you and see where he stands. Make sure he will stand up to his family and support your choices (no matter how much they will bother the family)

Good luck and I hope if gets better

Re: Anyone Besides Me Having Serious Problems with HIS family? (VENT)

Now I get along very well with FH's family. They are all nice people. But I do undertand how some minor things may come along into life and throw you some curve balls. I think the best thing for you to do is be patient and understanding. You will always be the one who comes out on top. The best advice i can give you is to remain calm at all times. i know it is hard but the calmer u are the better person you are. And chances are things will happen for the rest of your life. there will always be some function or some party or some incident, conversation, etc..... that can stir things up or get everyone going or may just annoy you... Marriage is one big compromise. Just do your best to always remain the better person...

I'm sorry u are going through this. My FI family is a major part of his life so I have to deal with them. We get along ok for the most part but I constantly feel like I am on eggshells with them and that I might do something to piss them off. It sucks!! I feel for u sweetie. Hang in there!!!

Well I went to bed a few minutes after this post, only to wake up to a letter from his mother. Lovely. I feel that we are at the end of our rope.

(UPDATED) Anyone Besides Me Having Serious Problems with HIS family? (VENT)

HERE IS MY REPLY, WAS I TOO HARSH???

Dear Linda:

Quite honestly, I have absolutely no idea what set things off today. I don't understand how feelings can be hurt when simply said hello and ran to my car with a wet head in thirty degree weather to put my make up on and wait for Brian who was supposed to be right behind me (and I mean right behind me, I didn't expect him to take an extra five minutes the way he did). It was thirty degrees, it had nothing to do with who was out there and I wasn't about to stand there and freeze. Why must everyone read in to what I do and don't do and feel the need to discuss it as soon as my back is turned?

I have no idea why my phone said out of service. I see that Lauren did try to call me last night, however I went to sleep as soon as I got home, Maybe you calling my old number.

It has been over six years that Brian and I have been together, and to be honest, I have never felt completely comfortable around you. It had nothing to do with whether or not I liked you (because I did), However, I always had but I have always felt that as soon as I walked away, you would always have something to say about me like you do with the rest of your family and friends (ie: Sal, Joanne, Joanne Siegel, Vicki, Pat from work, Jimmy's family, etc...). After today, I know I am right. I find it funny how everyone on the block seems to know my business and Brian is not the one to tell them. We were walking up the block the other day only to have someone stop and say something about it. It wa's none of this persons business. It's none of anyones' business. If we are having problems, I don't understand how everyone knows because it sure hasn't come from me.

From day one, I have tried to include you in the planning. At first, you seemed upset that it was so far away. You made one particular comment that you hoped we would still be together. That hurt. You seemed upset that it was in the winter...I''m sorry, but that is all we could afford. You didn't seem completely happy with John Anthony's until you got the approval from Jimmy's family.., I used to email you constantly hoping that you would give some input. Nothing. As you see, time flew and we are supposed to be getting married in a little over 100 days. Why is all of this happening now? Is this because I declined your offer to change something about the wedding that you didn't approve of? That would be a very stupid reason to start a stupid war over.

And I don't understand how my relationship with Mary has totally been ruined and how things have gone this far with her. I really don't. She has been there for me from day one, giving me ideas, she helped ups out financially, things were going so nicely and now ... I feel that
everything I do has to be analyzed and scrutinized to make me come out looking badly.

And from everyone turning everything I do around, the last thing I ever wanted to do has happened. It has finally affected my relationship with Brian I don't think anyone can image how much I love him, and if I didn't love him so much, it would be so easy to walk away from all of this. I refuse to let that happen.

Now that I have explained to you the way I feel, I hope that you understand. I have no idea how any one this started, I don't understand how I always come out looking like the bad person when I never have the intentions of hurting anyone's feelings. I think that you are Mary are so irritated with me that no matter what I do, it will always be misinterpreted. And after yesterday, I see that I am right.

Am I going to get in trouble with BRian by this letter?????

Re: (UPDATED and MUCH WORSE!) Anyone Besides Me Having Serious Problems with HIS family? (VENT)

should you all go out to dinner and talk it out with Brian there? This way he can be witness to anything that goes on, and you can tell them your goal is to start over and put the past behind you. I hate that you have to be going through all this. Weddings are stressful enough. There is this saying MY mother in law always says.....Keep your enimies close. It works to kill em with kindness, then they can have nothing to say, even if it isnt how you feel. I guess thats a little two faced, but it keeps the peace.....I dont know, this is a tough one! Good Luck Hon.

Re: (UPDATED and MUCH WORSE!) Anyone Besides Me Having Serious Problems with HIS family? (VENT)

I have bent over backwards to try that, trust me! I have been there for than more that it was you can ever imagine. I have helped then out with her teenage daughter from h*ll problems, I have always been curtious, I tried to keep her advised of everything I was doing and I asked for her help and input every step of teh way. We just paid for her daughter to go to Cancun and believe it or not, a month went by and she never even called to say thank you untl teh day she left for Cancun. I alwyas try to help put when I am up there, I can count on two hands how many times I have called her and she has actually returned my calls through the years. Until right before we got engaged, I was never included in any of teh holidays otehr than Christmas Eve. Not Easter, not Thanksgiving, not Birthday parties...I could hand her her gift and she would never mention that she was having people over for ckae later that day. For six years I have tried and now that everything is out in the open, I think it's six years of stale anger just exploding at one time. I could go on and on about little sarcastic comments she has made to me that Brian said I should have let rolled off me, but I am very sensitive and unfortunatly, I can't do that. And I can not give him an ultimatium~them or me...They are his family and I understand that they are all he has, but THEY WILL BE ALL HE HIS IF HE DOESN'T START DEFENDING ME!

Ok, you are getting married in like 3 1/2 months so his family needs to stop acting immature.. First of all, they aren't going through you which would piss me off.. they continue to go through your FI and that is extremely fustrating to him. So you have to hear it twice as bad, because he gets frustrated with you and then he gets frustrated with them and it all comes down on you. You don't want something this petty to a)ruin your wedding day and b) become a strain on your marriage.. IMO you need to call his mom and his aunt and go out to lunch and tell them that you love your FI very much and you all not getting along is hurting him. I know it's hard to be nice to people that aren't nice to you (hold your breath) bite your tongue do all you can just to get along with his family. They are his family and he loves them, and he HAS to put up with them...lol.. I would definately confront the situation.. Be the better person and actually talk to them about it. (it may be a shock to them concidering they are sh*t talkers.. But I would try everything I could possible try.. They my FI and myself would know that I did everything in my power to straighten things out..GOOD LUCK!!! Don't let this get you down.. Family in a lot of cases is an issue with marriage.. Everyone has their own opinions and attitudes.. But your love for your FI and vice versa will overpower any other problems you might face..

I am sorry to hear that you are having so many problems with his family. I know how you feel. I do not get along with FMIL and as of last I nolonger get a long with his sister. His sister is a nut job and has said some horrible things about me. She doesnt know me at all. I have meet her may 5 times since we started dating. At this point I am afriad that she will make a scene (sp) at our wedding.

So I know excatly what you are going through. I have no advice for you.

Wow, and I thought I had it bad.

Pook, I'm very sorry to hear about this huge mess - it's the last thing you need right now, not to mention that the maturity level just sunk to what seems to be a new low.

It's very difficult when your FMIL and you have completely different ways of looking at the world. Mine, for example, is Extremely Materialistic - talking about how offended she was when she invited a group of family to her younger son's Bar Mitzvah and they gave him a $20 gift certificate (oh the horror!!!!!), and all I could do was just smile and nod. Sometimes it feels like they can never understand the way you see things, nor would they want to. Like they live on a completely different plane of existance.

I wish I knew what to say to you, but I don't. Instead I'll just offer smiles and sympathy, and tell you that your wedding is going to be beautiful no matter what!

I had major problems when I first got married. Like you, my MIL scrutinized every little thing I did. She was jealous. She had 3 sons. My hubby is the eldest and the first to marry. It was tough. Things didn't change for the better until she realized how much I did for him when he was sick. My husband almost died during surgery about 5 years ago. It took that for her to open her eyes and see the real me. I hope your MIL wakes up sooner and under less drastic circumstances. Live your life together as a couple with no regrets. They will either fall in line or fade away. You and Brian are whats important here. His mom has to realize that you are the one Brian chooses to be with. Brian needs to be clear on this with his family.

Good Luck!

Laurie:
I understand...Will & I have to have a 'family meeting' over dinner this week to discuss why we don't get along. I feel like I am in friggin Kindergarten. ANd it is all because of his family & how they have treated us through this whole process.

His mother dresses as though she was in mourning when we got engaged....really.

I think what finally did it for me & Will was that I was ready to call of the wedding. (not the marriage, mind you, but I was ready to go to 'town hall' & get married without them all & f(&%$ whoever didn't like it.) This really made him realize what they were putting me through & finally stood up to his mother, aunt, uncle, cousisns.... you name it - they were all invovled.

At any rate, you & Brian need to be on the same page before you can go up against his family, IN EVERY THING. Let it all air out & make sure you both have the same understanding of what has gome on & agree upon a course of action. IT IS IMPERATIVE that you do this before confronting his mother/aunt/sister or it will almost definately turn on you in one way or another.

You know I am here if you need me...
