Updated - Gabes fevers. I was right!

Sorry to post on this board but I really need the traffic. I'm not caring for my pediatrician right now.

I don't know what to do. Yesterday he had 106 fever. (ear thermometer) I didnt believe it so I took my own and it was 98.9 I gave him a bunch of Tylenol and rushed him to the doctor. On our way his fever was going down, 105.5, 104.4 and when they finally took him in 101.8 He also had a nebulizer treatment. His oxygen was low, but after it was almost fine so they sent us home. They told me just to keep his fevers down, keep him hydrated and give him a nebulizer treatment every 4 hours.

Well this morning we just woke up and he has a 104.5 fever again I gave him a bunch of Tylenol and will be giving him another nebulizer treatment.

Do you have any more advice though? I mean these high fevers are scaring me so much and they tell me just to keep it down! I feel like there should be more they can do? I think Im going to call them back when they open at 8:30 He keeps telling me his body hurts and hes thirsty. I just feel so helpless. Is there anything else I can do?

THE HIGH FEVER CAN CAUSE DEHYDRATION, THAT MAYBE WHY HE'S THIRSTY. DEHYDRATION CAN ALSO CAUSE JOINT ACHES. I WAS ALWAYS TOLD ME MY PEDIATRICIAN THAT FEVERS OVER 102 YOU SHOULD GIVE THEM MOTRIN INSTEAD OF TYLENOL. HTH.

I hope Gabe gets better!!

My DH's nephew (he's 4) also had a fever and was vomiting and they took to the doctor and had to run to the ER because he had pneunomia. He spent 4 days there! If you don't trust your doctor get a second opinion, fevers are a sign of infection and those are some pretty high ones.

Thanks for the responses. I just posted and I lost it! I hate when that happens.

I was thinking pneumonia because Gabe has had it 4 times before. Hes coughing, his belly aches and hes short of breath with a fever. All signs of pneumonia, but the doctor assured me his chest was clear. She said she thinks he just has a virus?

I want to take him to the E.R. only because I associate that as being better than my doctors office, but I dont know what else they would do? My doctor said Tylenol/Motrin, fluids and rest.

I'm just worried :(

Amy, those were the same symptoms my DH's nephew had!! His belly ached and they thought it was appendicitis..but it turned out to be pneunomia. Please take him to the ER, listen to your gut!

I hope he gets better soon!

Im going to call his doctor 1st at 8:30

I know all the symptoms and he has all of them, but I told her that yesterday and they checked him over. They said his lungs were fine. Im going to try to bring him in 1st thing w/o a neb treatment and see how his lungs sound.

how old is the baby. it could be RSV . don't waste your time with the ear thermometer. get a rectal when its that high. alternate every three hours, motin/tylenol and watch closely for dehydration. you can tell by how many wet diapers he has. its probably a virus. pneumonia can only be seen on xray!!! if his chest looked fine on xray he probably doesnt have it. does he have any cough?

He does have a bad cough, a belly ache, a high fever, body aches and he is dizzy. Hes wheezy and taking shallow breaths. Im sure Gabe wont go for a rectal, hes almost 5. But the ear thermometer works fine on me too. I keep getting in the 98 range for me.

I just called work and they were not able to get me a sub either

I thought he hadcroup like 2 days ago, but now its just a hacking cough. He was coughing so much he wet his pants and usually ends each coughing session with choking. Hes sleeping now and his temp is in the 101 range. Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for the help.

How did they diagnose the pneumonia the first 4 times? Was it by chest x-ray. What's the underlying problem that causes the need for neb treatments? I would definitely take him to either another DR. or an ER. A fever of 106 can cause seizures. There has to be some form of infection either bacterial or viral that's causing the high fevers. I would demand a full workup.

Amy take him to the ER..a virus shouldn't cause a fever. Is he coughing up anything? Is it clear or colored?

You sound so stressed. Get some peace of mind at the hospital.

I would take him to the emergency room immediately. Call your doctor and let him know. It is not good for a child to have such a high fever for as long as he has. Plus he is probably severly dehydrated.

The told me it was pneumonia the first 3 times by listening to his chest and by checking his oxygen levels. I guess thats how they could tell.
The last time they told me they wanted to check his lungs and we had an X-Ray. I remember that time I thought he was fine. I thought for sure he didnt have pneumonia and HE DID I had no idea. His fever is about 101 right now and hes having a neb treatment. He seems to be doing fine. I dont know why I cant get this fever any lower though. It hasnt been over 104 since 10a.m.

I think you should take him to the ER. For a baby to be on a nebulizer like the way you described means he should be monitored by doctors. Plus his fever isnt going down. I hope he feels better and I really think you shoudl take him to the hospital.

I have CPR/ first aid, etc... You need to go to the ER. It is now the 2nd day for a fever. And this is a high fever.
