I was on my way to work today, and I stopped at my usual station to get gas. Right after I leave, I notice, or should I say I HEAR that my driver side window is not closed all the way. It seemed to be off track and whistling like a teapot. Ugh!
SO, I'm driving down Sunrise Hwy and its raining and I put my windshield wipers on and I notice they are moving kind of strangely, almost like a jerky movement. Hmmmmmmmm...strange. Then my airbag light goes on. WTH? Now I'm getting nervous. I call Scott and tell him I'm going to drop my car off at the station on my way home from work to get it looked at.
Right after I hang up with him all my gauges start going wacko. Great. Thank goodness I'm right by work. One block away, they all just go to zero. I pull into the parking lot and shut off my car and try to start it again. Click, click, click...great!
I call the station and tell them and he tells me it sounds like the battery or alternator. He said if its the battery a jump should get me to the station (they are in Bohemia and I was in Farmingdale), but if its the alternator I probably wouldn't make it. I decided to chance it...you know where this is going...
Of course I get stuck in the middle lane right in front of an intersection about 20 ft over the RR tracks (I prayed I would make it over!). Not ONE single person even stopped to see if I was ok!!!! They sat behind me and honked, yelled and cursed, but no one even checked if I was ok. Nice. Did I say lately how I hate people?
One of the guys from work was nice enough to come help me get my car behind Jillians where I sat soaked to my knees for over an hour waiting for the tow truck.
The first thing the gas attendant says to me was 'weren't you just here getting gas?'
I really would have preferred to work today!!!

Re: My CRUMMY day
eek.. so sorry...
My 'stang did that to me once. I totally freaked out.. it was the alternator.. I was so angry. I walked to an Auto Zone (this is in Texas.. loooong walk) and bought a new one.. walked back and installed on the side of the road.
Imagine if you will a 5 foot 2 inch lady in business clothes cussing like a sailor installing an alternator in blazing Texas heat. So off I went and then.. sputter sputter dead.. I was furious. This time some guys at a local shop helped.. Found out later I needed a special rebuilt alternator... go figure.
I've learned all I know about cars from my old Mercury Lynx and my Ford Mustang.. I traded that 'stang in after another few mechanical mishaps. Got my baby.. my Zoomer now! hehe
Good luck! If it's your alternator make sure they give you trade in value. Most alternators can be recycled.
Keep dry and warm..!!

Re: My CRUMMY day
Totally stinks!!! Very similar thing happened to me. I was working alone on a holiday (some dead president or activist or something ) and it was POURING. My car wouldn't start, so I went back inside, called AAA, and they eventually came and jump started my car. I went to leave, made it out of the parking lot and my car proceeded to die at a traffic light right next to a gas station. Of course, the AAA truck was about 2 minutes away, but I had no way of getting him back. I ran into the middle of the road and asked the guys at the station to push me to the side of the road, but they refused. I angrily got back into my car and started to call the police, and some random guy knocked on my window and pushed me to the side of the road. I went to get out and thank him, but when I turned around, he was gone (spooky as all hell!). I finally got back in touch with AAA (my cell phone died so I was using a pay phone at the gas station and had to stand next to it in the rain for them to call me back to tell me when the tow truck was coming), and had to wait over 2 hours for the same friggen guy to come back and get me.
It was my darn alternator. I feel your pain! Truly and deeply.

Re: My CRUMMY day
Thanks everyone...the mechanic called and said its my alternator (duh).
We are just weeks away from getting our new car! I really had a feeling this was going to happen! We were going to sell Scott's Jeep and keep my car for a station car b/c its only 3 years old, but GEEEEEEEZZZZZ!!!
Its just one darn thing after another!! I can't even remember how many times its been in the shop this year!!
I HATE this car!!!!!

Re: My CRUMMY day
LOL!
There was a time when I was really into cars too! I had a 69 Mustang and then a 71 Cougar both with 302 strokers, flowmasters, and 411's all decked out to do the quarter mile. Geez, I was REALLY a car chick! Those days are over! My Dh laughs at me b/c I know more about cars than him!!
This car is a 2000 Hyundai Sonata. It was a stolen/recovery freebie.

Re: My CRUMMY day
heh.. my FH laughs too. He takes me with him when he visits a new place for the first time and they need to play with his car. I just sit back watch and listen then tap him on the arm. Usually I just act all innocent like 'But excuse me.. I really don't know a whole lot but how come you need to replace the water pump if maybe it's only the belts.. could ya just try those first?'
I take my FH with me to be the 'man' but usually never works out. I tell most mechanics up front pretty honestly. 'Dont even try to mess with me. I know about my car than you can imagine' I can give dates of all major repairs and tune ups and have my oil changed every 3k miles OR 3 months which ever is first, period. Only thing broken on my car is the AC. I change my air filter so don't give me that load.. or the old Windshield wipers crud. Please!! It may not be 'tricked out' but she's my baby!
Jim (FH) just looks lost when they start talking about pistons and intakes!
ETA: to be fair.. he is learning though. He even now gives right of way to all Mazda's by habit LOL.
