UPDATED - Please help me choose black tie optional dress for a wedding

So we have a wedding in a few weeks that's at a resort in Virginia. The invites say 'black tie optional' and I'm clueless... So I had DH take pictures of me in every dress I own tonight and could really use your help, ladies!

I'm going to the outlet mall tomorrow and if none of these cut it, I'll buy a new dress. DH says I don't buy the right dresses for my body. If I knew how to do that, I would!!!! ::sigh::

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

So I got a dress today... I'm going to try to get DH to take a photo of me in it, but here's the dressing room shot...

What do you think?

I think dress 3 is the most 'black tie' appropriate since it has the most glitz factor with the sparkles and the satin skirt.

I like either the long navy or the long gold. For some reason, I think black tie optional wedding = long dress.

Dress 3 is beautiful. Thats my choice!

I don't love any of them if I'm being totally honest...the one I like best is the one that the jacket goes with, but without the jacket.

I don't know why you try to hide your body!!!!!! Get something sexier Sandra! Something like this would be very flattering on you:

I like #4 best. I don't think you have to wear a long dress for a black tie wedding...I rarely do.

DH agrees with you on this!

I love the ones you sent me the links to! After going strapless for my wedding, I really love how it looks on me. I'm only 5'4' (barely) so it's hard to find gowns that look right, but I think I'm going to see what I can find while I'm out tomorrow if there's anything appropriate.

The gold one is actually 2 sizes too big, believe it or not. Most of these dresses are a size or two bigger than I usually wear. I was debating maybe taking the navy one to the tailor and seeing if they can cut down the jacket to make it more stylish. It's way too huge!

Seriously, thank you all so much for your input! I really, really appreciate it!

I wish I could go on something like 'what not to wear' -- I have an incredibly difficult time finding things that look nice on me, despite having lost 40-45 lbs in the last 3 1/2 years. I look at some of these photos and I just feel awful about how far I have left to go. Hopefully I can find something appropriate that actually looks good... otherwise, maybe I'll try what I said and have the jacket cut down on the navy dress, or just wear the black one.

I like number 4 the best.

but I personally think you can look much better in other dresses. I DO believe those dresses are too big on you... I can see they are too big on you. And they are also not too age appropriate. You can sooooooo rock something more amazing. Something more youthful. I'm going to dabble and see what I can find for you.

Quit hiding behind those dresses!!!! Show yourself more!!!

this one is a little pricey.. BUT it's a great style and should look slimming on you. At the very least it's a guide for what to look for. see how the middle bunches but also sinches at the waste? it makes your waste look smaller and the bunching hides the rest well.

and you can even pair that with a shawl or even of those little jacket thinkgs... id ont know what they are called... the ones that realy just cover your shoulder. if you check my pic album there are pics of me in one of them from the eparty... which i was about 44 lbs heavier then.... so it made me more comfortable. It looks like you are more comfortable hiding yourself... so wearing spaghetti straps might make you uncomfortable... you have to kind of ease into more fitted clothes.... and you don't want to feel uncomfortable either... that's why im suggesting it.

Ok, you guys have really convinced me that I need to try something different.

I'm going to the outlet mall tomorrow myself, and Monday having a girls' day out with SIL and her friend (both whom are 6 years younger than I am) -- hopefully HOPEFULLY I can find something that will be worth spending money on. Seriously, I have 3 dresses (including 2 of these) with tags on them in my closet still. I wonder if Nordstrom takes returns 6 years later...

click

you can wear short dresses to black tie... but they should be fancier looking ones... and make sure you pair it with the right accessories. accessories can really dress up an outfit.

i also edited the post from prior to this one.

You guys are amazing!!! I looked at everything you suggested and I love them all!!! I am definitely going to go shopping and see what I can find. I'll be back with updates hopefully soon!

The other dress I have that I could possibly wear is the one I wore to my RD that's also what I wore to a wedding a few weeks ago. I think it might be too 'light' for the middle of November, though.

It only hits just below my knee though.

I voted for number 3. I know how you feel being extra curvealicious myself!!!! I had a hard time feeling sexy in anything I tried on and then I changed my mindset to.. My FH loves me for me and I am a damn sexy big and beautiful biotch!!! Be proud of yourself for losing the weight
(I think I found it cause I've gained over 40 pounds the past 4 years) LOL Try on all different types of dresses till you find the 'One' and look in the mirror and say I'm one sexy wife!!!! Good luck!! FM me if ya need help!!!!!

I'm curvy too -- but a slim fitting dress with the right spanx does me a LOT of favors. I got the higher power spanx and they smooth everything out under the dresses! WELL worth the investment!!!

You gotta get tighter ones, those all look big on you!

ETA: Out of the dresses above, the one I like is the last iridescent (sp?) one - without the jacket!
