Upgrade on car rental

Did anyone get upgraded on their car rental in Hawaii b/c they were on their honeymoon? My FI thinks we should reserve a compact car, b/c they might upgrade us to a convertible or jeep when we get there. Is it worth the extra $$$ to get a convertible on Maui and Kauai?

Re: Upgrade on car rental

We rented a convertible on Maui but not Kaui. I would recommend renting one for the entire time. The weather and scenery are so beautiful, you won't want to miss a thing.

As far as upgrades, we decided to book what we wanted so that we wouldn't be disappointed if we didn't get upgrades. Turned out to be a good decision. We didn't get a single upgrade in 2 weeks. By the end we even asked if they ever upgraded, and still didn't get anything. Oh well, hopefully you'll have better luck!!

Re: Upgrade on car rental

I've never heard of an on-the-spot upgrade to a convertable or a jeep - only from compact to mid-size or mid-size to full.

Re: Upgrade on car rental

I just got back today from Hawaii! They did not upgrade us because we were on our honeymoon. We also had a compact car included in our package.

In Maui, they said it would be $50/per day to upgrade to a convertible and more for an SUV or jeep. Since we were in Maui for 7 days we decided not to. We didn't think it was worth the cost to us. We wound up taking about 2 all day driving trips!

In Kauai, they said it was only $20/per day for a convertible so we did it! They said between our credit card and our honeymoon package that it would only be $20 (have no clue what that meant!). They said a jeep would be closer to $50. I think they messed up the pricing in Maui.

We really enjoyed the convertible although we only took on all day driving trip in Kauai (only there three days!)

The rental car place did not recommend a jeep in Kauai. They said it rains suddenly and it can be a pain. We did not even have a minute of rain (even in the rain forest)!!

PS We did not find many upgrades because we were honeymooning and everyone asked if we were honeymooning. Almost everyone at the resort is on their honeymoon! A few times the resorts gave us coupons for free desserts at restaurants off of the resort. The hotel in Maui did upgrade our room but DH straight out asked if they would! In Kauai, DH wasn't around when I checked in and I was too chicken to ask!
