Upstate weddings

OK ladies, so my best friend is getting married next month upstate in Rochester and FH best friend is getting married at the end of the summer in Oswego. I know upstate weddings are not the same as LI weddings, but I've only ever been to LI weddings. So any ideas of what I should expect? In terms of attire, cash bars etc. What are your experiences? Thanks ladies!

You may have a cash bar... you may not have an outrageous coctail hour.... you never know outside LI! Definetely bring cash if you want to drink - just in case!

attire is a bit more casual. at one wedding i went to half the guests were in jeans and another bunch were in pants for the guys. the long islanders were wearing suits. cash bar is most likely. also buffets are more common.

A few years ago I had 2 weddings to go to in one weekend. One was at Villa Lomabrdis and the other was upstate. Boy were they different!!!

I went to the one upstate and it was a very small cocktail hr (passed around horderves and fruit/cheese/veggie platter) and the open bar only lasted until an hr into the reception.

Well I live in rochester and all the weddings i have been to here have been very dressy and all have had open bar. I cant imagine they are too different from yours on LI except you guys spend a whole lot more money for probably about the same things we have here. Which can be a good thing because you are not expected to put as much money in a card.

I'm getting married upstate not too far outside of Rochester and there can be a huge difference between a wedding there compared to one here, but they can also be pretty much the same. Packages are a lot more flexible. At my hall, you pick what you want passed and served at the cocktail hour. You can have just passed trays or you can have all the carving stations and hot food. There's a wide variety of appetizer and dinner choices, all of which you choose. You even choose open, cash or tab bar. You're pretty much designing your own package which I thought was awesome because after seeing all the catering halls out here, I couldn't see how people could eat or even need all the food they make you pay for. You just have more options when picking your menu...and a lot more decisions to make...lol. So it's all based on what the couple picks.

There is no difference. I am from Westchester....I think its funny how everyone calls it 'the country' from down here. Sure Rochester is farther north but dont expect anything different. Just be prepared as you would for any other wedding you have been to.

I was just in rochester for business with FH
and every nite we were there FH took me to a 4 or 5 star restuarant. Rochester was really built up, not hickish at all, alot of money there as well. cause the airport is there and its where they house all the private jets, etc

i would think it would be comparable to a ny style wedding

Sweet, thanks guys. I didn't mean to offend anyone or imply that it was worse than down here, I just wasnt sure since FH is always talking about how our 'downstate' weddings are so much more ridiculous than ones upstate. I just wanted to make sure I had all my bases covered.

I lived in Rochester for 24 years before moving to LI. It's true that some Rochester weddings can be seen as shabby in comparison to LI weddings, but not all of them are. I've been to BBQ weddings (with a pig roast), cash bar weddings, and very fancy weddings. You can see people in a range of attire, from jeans to tuxes. It just depends on the type of wedding the bride and groom want (or want to pay for). Maybe you should call your friend to know what to expect.

Yeah, I called my best friend, who is a guy, so you can imagine how helpful that was. He was like 'Just wear something nice, you will look pretty whatever you wear'. So I went to the website of the place they are having it at, Glendoveer's, and there weren't many pictures so I couldn't really get a feel for it. Have any of you Rochester girls been there or know about it?
