*URGENT* Queens Public High Schools?

*URGENT* Queens Public High Schools?

So, my idiot brother got expelled from his school today for calling his teacher an unsavory name. He was already on academic probation so I guess this was the final straw. Merry effing Christmas from a CATHOLIC high school.

Anyway, my mom is a wreck, so I'm trying to help her find any information on any public high schools in Queens. We live in Middle Village but he's willing to commute about an hour if necessary. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

TIA!

Forest Hills, John Bowne, Francis Lewis

Is he opposed to heading to Manhattan for school? The time spent commuting through Queens is kind of the same.

Not at all! Thanks I'm definitely looking into these 3- they are at the top of the list.

Be careful and ask whether there is a residency requirement. I remember when I was applying to the public high schools, I was required to show I lived in the town.

Forest Hills, Francis Lewis required that I prove my residency w/in their 'zone'. The only high school that didn't ask for that was Bayside (the one I ultimately went to) only because I was admitted under their Arts/ Music Program (it was a magnet school with separate admissions requirements).
Since you live in Middle Village, you are probably zoned for Grover Cleveland which means he has no choice but to go there..(and unfortunately GC is not that great).

I'm not sure if these rules are still in effect now but they were when I was a student 10 thousand years ago.

Thanks- someone did mention that to me about the zoning at Francis Lewis specifically but that they fought it and were able to attend. Thank you for the heads up though!

What about the new one they opened on Metropolitan by Trader Joe's?

I just googled it, it's called 'Queens Metropolitan High School' ... creative.

Robert H Goddard in Ozone Park opened a small high school inside of the middle school

You can check that one out

Forest hills. And it won't be a bad commute

Bayside is decent

Cardozo in Bayside is really good.

Stay away from Grover Cleveland. I teach over there.

I'm a nyc teacher. Its not like that anymore. Every single atudent has to apply to schools (even if they want their zoned school). They put their top choices (up to 12 I think) and then see what they get accepted into.

I tried to get my daughter into some of the better H.S. and was out of luck because they only want to send you to your zoned school unless it is an unsafe school.

I'd try Cardozo.

What about getting him into another Catholic School? I think that's a better idea.

Jill, call up Martin Luther in Maspeth... they will definitely take him, they are dying for money. As much as I'd hate to help them get any extra money it's a better option than Grover Cleveland.

What school was he at before?

ETA: I know that at least one of Kevin's students had been kicked out of Christ the King for like, beating some kid in the head with something and he was allowed to go to Martin Luther, lol.

Thanks Dana! This was the first school I suggested! He got kicked out of Holy Cross.

I doubt another Catholic school would take him- he's been left back, his grades aren't great, he's always in trouble... Holy Cross is a Catholic school for 'last resorts' of sorts. And they gave him the boot soooo... here we are. Thank you all for your advice though!
