So we've been looking at a lot of different places, and I think we've somewhat decided...unless we find some other place that's great. We're obviously working in a budget. We think we'll be having around 130/140 people. We're also kind of leaning towards a cocktail reception.
We're going to a tasting at both venues...food is very important to us.
Has anyone been to a wedding at either of these venues? How is the food? Has anyone been to a cocktail reception at either of these? How did it work out? I've actually never been to a cocktail reception, but my fiance loves the idea.
Please be honest and give me as much information as you have! I'd really really appreciate it!
Thanks!!

Re: Vanderbilt at Dowling vs. de Seversky
Vanderbilt at Dowling is stunning, I have been to 2 weddings there in the last 3 years and the food is wonderful. I looked into de Seversky and I don't feel the inside of the mansion is at all comparable to that of the Vanderbilt IMO.

We got married at the Vanderbilt and we still get compliments about the Cocktail hour. If you're planning on doing the cocktail reception. Everyone loved our wedding and the Mansion makes for beautiful pictures.
I've seen pictures of weddings at de Seversky and they're beautiful. My friends who have attended weddings there said that its a bit small. They didnt mention anything about food. I hear de Seversky has beautiful grounds.
If you want to see some wedding pictures please check out my photographer's website www.yangphoto.com we're Tass and Ken 2008 wedding.

Re: Vanderbilt at Dowling vs. de Seversky
We almost picked De Seversky until we heard numerous complaints about their food, not just for weddings but other events there (I was bummed, I love the property)...we had planned on a tasting to be sure but then FH decided the ballroom would be a squeeze and didn't want to be worried about fitting everyone...a friend that got married there said 125 should be a comfortable max even though they say more can fit (if you have a band, they would take up more room too).
Vanderbilt is catered by Lessings, and I just had a tasting with them a couple of weeks ago, and the food was AMAZING.
You should do a tasting at both to see if it's what you like! I think De Seversky does them the first Tuesday of the month, and you have to pay.

De Seversky tastings are free for the bride and groom :) I have not heard a bad review from de seversky for events recently with regards to the food. Fh and I personally liked de seversky over the Vanderbilt at Dowling. Good luck with your decision!

If you've booked with them, then yes, it's free (I should hope so!!). If you haven't booked yet, it's like going out to eat, but they deduct the tasting cost from your contract when/if you book.
De Seversky was my first choice if the ballroom was just a little bit bigger, it's so gorgeous!! Good luck.

Re: Vanderbilt at Dowling vs. de Seversky
I was recently at a wedding at the Bourne Mansion....beautiful setting however the food was just ok, nothing to rave about. It could have been what I had to eat or just an off day.
