Re: Vanderbilt Mansion or Harrison House???

I believe the Vanderbilt Mansion can only be booked one year in advance so if you are planning a September 2004 wedding you can't secure your date until September 2003. That's something to check into. They are both beautiful places! Do a search for each, there has been alot of feedback on both places.

Another problem with the Vanderbilt, especially in September, is that you have to work around the University's schedule. We looked there, but went with the Bourne Mansion instead. I just was weary of the one year policy.

That's too funny. Before we went to see the Vanderbilt Mansion, it was our first choice. But the year in advance policy, the working around the Dowling School schedule, and the overall condition caused us to choose the Bourne Mansion as well. I think it is much more secluded and the Mansion is bigger and in better shape.

I'm having my wedding at the Vanderbilt Mansion and I have only good things to say about it so far. I booked my wedding less than a year in advance, so that policy didn't really affect me at all. I have never been to the Harrison House, but I've heard positive reviews. i don't think you can go wrong with ether choice.

I booked at Vanderbilt Mansion and I love it and can't wait. I lucked out and got the last date in October. Otherwise I would have had to wait until April of this year to book for April 2004. The one year policy is a bit annoying. But its run by Lovin' Oven Caterers who have awesome food. I also checked Bourne Mansion but the site fee was too much to handle. The one year policy isnt bad b/c you can put your name on the date and once the college finishes with their schedule you will be contacted. Good Luck

I haven't been to Vanderbilt, so I can't comment on that. In terms of the Harrison House, I found the layout very awkward. The cocktail hour would be broken up into multiple rooms that aren't too easy to get between. The main dining room also is a weird shape, if I remember correctly the band actually gets placed in the hall, and one side of tables can't see the other. Perhaps these issues were because I was having 200+, and if your wedding is smaller it wouldn't be the same problem. Those issues aside, it was obviously a beautiful place.

If you like the Vanderbilt and want in this year you may be able to pick up a date that someone cancelled on. I know someone who booked in January a Sat. night in July this year. You never know.

There are definitely positives and negatives about both. The food at the Vanderbuilt (Lovin Oven) is the amazing. The Harrison House is beautiful and very convenient since your guests can stay there. For me, the booking restrictions at the Vanderbuilt would definitely factor in. You really can't go wrong with either one.

I've never been to the Vanderbilt, but I did visit the Harrison House- I just wasn't thrilled. In my opinion, the entertainment makes the party- and if you can't see them it takes away from the atmosphere. I also though for the price per plate that the place was a little shoddy looking. JMO.

I wound up booking the Carlyle- you're from Bethpage- you should check them out!

my brother got married at the harrison house last year and i thought it was wonderful. the food was delicious, the service was great, and everyone had a fantastic time. of course, i was glowing b/c my brother was so happy and my new sister-in-law is just wonderful - so i may have had one rose-colored glasses all night! my only complaint was that it was a bit crowded for the 220 people who were there. i think if your party is under 200, you should be fine. good luck!

I had the best time at a wedding at the Harrison House. We all stayed in the rooms in the back buildings. They opened up the pub after ther reception- kept it open as late as we wanted and it had a great jukebox and dance floor. People were still dancing at like 3 am. Also, the cocktail hour by the pool was gorgeous. It was a few years ago though, so I don't remember much about the food, except that they had great service prior to the cermenony, passing hors d'oeuvres and champagne.

My wedding was at the Harrison House, and I have nothing but good things to say.
The band wasn't in the hallway, they were in the main room with the rest of the party.
I definately wouldn't try to put more than 200 guests in there, though. I'd say 170-180 would be a perfect number.
I posted the vendor review and pics awhile back and if you do a search for 'Harrison House' the thread should come up. They did a fabulous job. Hands down, a very elegant affair all around.
We partied until 5am.

Re: Vanderbilt Mansion or Harrison House???

there is a sizeable price difference between the two...does that matter?

the vanderbilt mansion is lovely, but is small (cocktail hour can get a little squooshy and no seats) so if you are going to have more than 130...I might say forget it

We were married at the vanerbilt manion last Oct. We booked the date in June. It was beautiful even though we didnt get to use the outside grounds due to the rain. I have never seen the Harrison House, so I cant compare the two...sorry
