Still looking for a reception site.... Has anyone been to an event here? It looks very pretty online. It is a Lessings site. Any feedback on this location/Lessings would be great. Thank you!

I went to a 50th b-day party there. It was very nice and the food was great. The reception room is an odd shape though, kinda shaped like a T.

They do very small weddings. I think 140 max. Very pretty but strange set-up. I didn't like the flow of the room.

Re: Vanderbuilt Mansion at Dowling
My sister had her wedding there a few years ago and it was absolutely beautiful. Yes, the room is a 'T' shape, but that did not stop everyone from having a great time. Everyone raves about what a unique venue it was, how beautiful the grounds were, etc., etc. I have to say I am a bit worried my wedding won't be able to measure up to hers, everyone loved it so much!

Re: Vanderbuilt Mansion at Dowling
we looked their but didn't love it. The place is a bit narrow and can hold up to 120 guest (max) comfortably....Also, place has an awkward T shape which can put 4 tables (2 each side) but whoever sit at the end will never see anything going on in the middle.
Good luck

I've never been to an event there, but I'm a student at Dowling, and I love the way the campus looks. The Vanderbuilt mansion is beautiful. I know the t-shaped room that everyone mentioned, and I can see how it might be kind of a difficult room to organize for a reception. What about the conservatory room? Is that for the cocktail hour? good luck with your decision!

I've never been there, but I did look at Bourne Mansion (also Lessings) and I can tell you that if you're concerned with price they will negotiate with you A LOT. I didn't even negotiate AT ALL, but Ben from Lessings just suddenly dropped the price $35 per head for a Saturday in August for absolutely no reason other than that I seemed really interested when I toured but then didn't follow up.

I went there for a bridal show, and it was absolutely beautiful! The only problem is, I know someone that works there (at the school its attached too) and she said that students will walk through the hall or be outside the whole time the wedding is going on! Since it is attached to the school. Once she said there was a wedding going on at the same time as an open house and they were doing tours there. Make sure to ask if there is an open house going on that day! Other than that its really beautiful, a little small for dancing!

If you have an evening wedding, this is not an issue.

Re: Vanderbuilt Mansion at Dowling
I am getting married next weekend there. The hall is a T but depending on the size of your wedding it can be a great attribute. We are having 110 guests (not small by any means but not a huge wedding) and we are having 9 oval tables of 12 down the center. We left the whole top of the 'T' open for the DJ and dancing.
I am not using lessings so I am not sure how their service is or their pricing.

oooh, good point! I didnt even think about that. But Dowling does have some late evening classes (some that end at 10 pm) and they might even leave the computer lab and library open late on weekends, so you should definitely check into this.

We are getting married at West Sayville Country Club which is also owned by Lessings. The food is excellent.

I can tell you that on a Friday night in July, there were absolutely no students to be seen. Your party is going to be located in Fortunoff Hall, where they do no not hold classes - it is mainly offices. I would be a bit concerned if it were a day wedding, but an evening wedding should be perfectly fine.
