Vegetarians...lots of questions

I don't like fish...I don't like much poultry...neverliked to eat that much red meat - AND nothing on the bone b/c it freaks me out...but tonight (and this happened the last time I ate tacos) I wanted to gag on the meat...

I'm not sure if its the taste...or if its the idea that its an animal...

so...heres the question...what do I eat? I love eggs (cage free )...nuts? I try to stay away from PB b/c of the calories and fat...I try to eat tofu...bu I guess I need to do it more often?

HELP??!!!

Re: Vegitarians...lots of questions

Beans, nuts, soy products (veggie burgers, nuggets, sausage), tofu, eggs, almond butter is good instead of peanut butter..... all good sources of protein instead of meat.

I am a strict veggie, and seeing a nutritionist, so if you want specific info on being a healthy vegetarian, feel free to FM me.

Good luck!

I'm a former vegetarian, and one of the best things you can eat is tempeh. It might take some getting used to, but is as versatile as tofu and actually better for you. They sell it plain so you can flavor it yourself, or it comes flavored as well. Check out your local health food store!

Erica - I've been the same way lately, especially after getting PG. I've never been a huge fan of meat, but lately I've had to choke down any meal with meat in it! (the mad cow incident put me over the edge - I was so disgusted by seeing the poor animals on the news all the time)

For a few wks I didn't have any meat, but the only things I'd had this week are chicken and turkey.

You should try Boca Burgers - they have a lot of soy protein and taste really good

I also get my protein from eggs, yogurt, etc. What I've recently had a problem with is enough iron - meat is the best source of that, so I've had to find it in other sources - Total cereal, spinach, etc.

Re: Vegitarians...lots of questions

there is the misconception that you need tons of protien. i have found that i get sick fromtoo much protein and i have heard it is dangerous on your kidneys to eat too much. and you can get protein in everything!!! salad, tofu, bread, vegetables, rice, etc. when you go to a restaurant, you can order what you would normally order without meat. grab a cookbook. i have been one since middle school and my mom and gma are both veggies, so it helped. i have a feeling that when i am pregnant i will be a carnivore, but i need to work on being a better vegetarian. i do eat milk and eggs, but my bf was a vegan and found it easy. good luck if you try to go with it. try to take a b12 and folic acid supplement b/c it is hard for a veggie to get those in the diet and you will need them when you decide to start getting pregnant.

They definitly are.

Not like I am a health expert, since I eat like garbage, but there is a thing called protein complementing.

Rice and beans make a complete protein
Peas and pasta is another one.

THe only complete protein is from animal products, so if you complement then you will get a complete one.

I don't like tofu, too mushy, but I at alot of the stuff Boca and Gardenburger makes, they make chik - n nuggets, bbq ribs, burgers, 'meat-loaf', 'pork cutlet' 'meat' lasagna, grilled chik -n

When DH makes meat I make them, and I love them.

Also don't eat MOrningstar Farms - they used genetically engineered soy, which they are not sure what it does to humans at this point, but anything genetiacally engineered seems a bit strange to me.

Michelle...do you cook Vin meat?

I honestly don't care if John eats meat...and I would cook it...I just don't know how...since I don't really like it

Re: Vegetarians...lots of questions

I cook him chicken nuggets, but i cna time that, he cooks his own meat, I have no clue how to tell if it is done, and i can't taste it, and would be scared to serve it to him raw.

And he is so particular with his steak, i swear I hear it mooing while he is eating it.

Re: Vegetarians...lots of questions

Lauren (octobergirl) hit the nail on the head. I'm a vegetarian also and it is easily managable.

Some don't like eating the meat substitute products b/c they often try to replicate the taste/texture of meat, others don't mind. Also, some products only replicate the kind of meal situation where you would eat it without replicating taste (i.e. tofu scrambler).

So many people are concerned about the protein intake of vegetarians but the actual amount we need is much less than most think.

I feel much healthier since I've been veggie. My mother, who often eats this way too (for health reasons and it was convienent when I lived home) always said that she had more energy on the days she didn't eat meat.

There are many great books about this and you could always see a nutritionist. I suggest you read up! It sounds like you are pretty well prepared for managing your diet b/c you intake of meat was always minimal (as mine was before I went completely veggie about 9 years ago). I take vitamin supplements every day too.

Re: Vegetarians...lots of questions

does anyone else think it is strange that tomatoes now have fish dna to make them prettier and sturdier??? i am understandinig this country less and less as the days go by!! what is next, having a period once a year? oh wait, their saying that is natural too!!!

yabbobay Posted:

Re: Vegetarians...lots of questions

well...I think the thinking for the period once a year is that the less you ovulate...the less chance for ovarian cancer....but who knows...

OK...I thought about something at lunch...having my favorite sandwich in the world!!!!

avacado, cucumber, lettuce with pesto on french bread

how does that stand up nutritionwise?
cocoa Posted:

Re: Vegetarians...lots of questions

excellent b/c the avocado has great fat in it!! your skin should be dewey with all of the essential fatty acids! is your bread whole wheat? now what would make it better would be romaine lettuce instead of iceburg lettuce, the darker the vegetable the more nutritional value!

yabbobay Posted:

Re: Vegetarians...lots of questions

I'm a huge avacado eater...I love them!!! but I didn't see that on the list of proteins...

I only eat WW (I think its better tasting that white...and DH is converted now too)

and I cannot remember the last time I ate iceberg...no taste...so yes romaine...

now...if I eat that every day am I getting the right nutrients?

i think I have to pick up a veggie for dummies book

Re: Vegetarians...lots of questions

well, if you want to spruce it up a bit, maybe you can add hummus for protien, tomatoes for lycopene, cheese for calcium and maybe some sprouts, too, but make sure you wash them b/c with sprouts, you risk salmonella.

yabbobay Posted:

Re: Vegetarians...lots of questions

I have to start making more hummus...

(I did have tomato and swiss on the sandwich too!!! woo hoo!! jsut forgot to mention!!)

thanks for the help

Yes they do! I like these more than the average gardenburger. You have to try the 'Quorn' products. They make a De-licious spicy 'chick' patty. Throw some chipotle sauce on it and it is very yummy! They also make a frozen mix to make fajitas with. You wouldn't believe how tasty their products are. But I can go on and on...
Me and FH are both Vegetarians and you would'nt believe how many options that are out there. And he loves to cook!
