I was really adamant about not wearing a veil, because I don't like the symbolism behind it...
However, the more that I look at pictures, the more I kinda want one...but I'm still kinda torn with the whole sort of anti-feminism thing...
Did anyone else struggle with this? What did you end up doing?

Re: Veil
I contemplated it too, because I always wanted to wear a tiara (never had a sweet 16).
I ended up getting my veil in Macy's during a trunk show for $50.

Re: Veil
MEEEEEEE!!!
I didnt want a veil at all- I was actually very adamant about it. Then about 1 month ago I decided I wanted one but also didnt want to pay a crazy amount of money on one if at the last min I changed my mind again. I went on E-bay and got 1 for $17.10 ---2 tier, pencil edge- crystals and its beautiful!

Re: Veil
Why not get a veil for the ceremony and then something else for the reception?

Re: Veil
I refused to wear a veil because I just don't like them. I got a birdcage veil and only because I like the way it looks. This was the one thing (so far) my mother gave me a hard time about but in the end I just couldn't bring myself to wear one.

Well there's a few things:
A loooong time ago (ancient times I believe...) women were veiled before the wedding so that the man couldn't reject her. Since the marriages were arranged, he often would've never seen her before. Therefore, if he got to the end of the aisle and she was ugly...then oh well! So I kinda think it's objectifying in that sense...
In the Norse culture, women were often 'veiled' ie. had a cape or blanket thrown over them, kidnapped, and then married to their kidnappers. That's another place where the idea of veiling being related to marriages comes from.
The lifting up of the veil symbolizes that the man 'accepts' his wife..so I take that as submission/dominance role.

Re: Veil
I had a problem with the symbolism of the veil, but my mother was dead set on it and I agreed to appease her. I just wore it for the ceremony and didn't wear a blusher or anything.
I have a lot of problems with a lot of things in the traditional wedding ceremony, so you just have to find what you are comfortable with.
I had a lot more problems with being 'given away' than with wearing a veil. so I had both parents walk me part way down the aisle and then I walked up to DH myself. You have to find what works for you, every ceremony is a very personal thing.

Re: Veil
Honestly, I just love the way a veil looks. I wouldnt read too much into the ancient symbolism of the veil if you want to wear one. Your family and friends know youre not wearing a veil to adhere to ancient traditions.

ITA! I don't like the symbolism either and neither does my Mom (She's an ultra feminist). We agreed that I'd wear a veil, but NO blusher.

Re: Veil
how about a veil without a blusher. Then it's only covering the back of your head and everyone sees your face - combine the old traditions with the new to suit your beliefs.

I just didn't want to pay a load of money for a piece of tulle. And I thought it would be annoying. I loved it! Who knew? I didn't want to take it off all night! It made me feel very bridely.

Re: Veil
yeah, i knew bout THAT symbolism ... i guess i just don't consider it anti-feminism or whatnot ..... it's something people used to do and is the reason veils exist, but so waht ... plenty of horrible things in the past are now tradition .... nobody's gonna think of it in the 'bad' way

Re: Veil
I didn't really want a veil (not for any feminist reason, just don't like things on my head). My mom was very insistent on the veil, basically had to beg me to try some on, and since she bought it, I let her pick it out. It's being taken off before the reception.

Re: Veil
If you like the look of a veil but not the symobolism, just put it on for the ceremony and pics. Take if off for the reception. You and your FH, make it your own symbol dont worry about the past and possibly leave the blusher out.
