Veil during walk down the aisle

Original post by cherryj24

Who is wearing it in front of your face and who is not? What are your opinions? I cant decide what i am going to do. I just don't want my brother all clumsy trying to take it out of my face and I want my FI to see me. Then I thought it might help sort of like if I were wearing sunglasses. AHHHH- how do you decide?

I'm wearing mine in front of my face. I don't really want to, but we're having a Jewish ceremony and that's how it's done.

My FI and I met with our Rabbi recently and this was one of the questions we had. He said it's optional whether or not you want to wear it. He told me there are different theories of what the veil symbolizes, but said that it is not specifically Jewish. Does anyone know anything else about what the veil religiously symbolizes?

I do. You are right it is not specifically Jewish but it is TRADITIONALLY Jewish. We had a traditional Jewish ceremony and my face was covered. Thats what it was, I had no choice. An elderly Jewish mother and domineering sisters would not allow me to purchase a veil that only had one layer for this reason. Trust me, you have no idea what I was up against.

The roots are from the Old Testament which Jewish people follow but so Protestants and Catholics as well. This is the information we put in our program in regard to our Bedeken or veiling ceremony:

The Bedeken is the veiling of the bride by the groom. The word “Bedeken” comes from the word “to check.” In the biblical story of Isaac and Rebecca, Rebecca veiled herself as a symbol of modesty upon seeing Isaac for the first time.

The Torah also recalls the predicament of Jacob who mistakenly believed he was marrying Rachel only to discover later that he had married her sister, Leah. It is, therefore, Jewish custom for the groom to veil the bride before the ceremony. Edward lowered the veil over Leslie’s face to set her apart from all others and to ensure that he will marry the woman he loves.

Hope this helps.

DH lowering the veil:

DH picking me up to take me to the chuppah together. I only had one layer over my face - thats all I needed:

I'm chosing not to wear it in front of my face. i think it would just annoy me anyway and I have a crazy fear of tripping at some point walking down the aisle.

I agree, I know it would bother me
