Then why don't you ask them which they prefer - a meal or a tip? This way, you'll get an honest answer and you won't have to worry about it.

I have an 8 piece band and the leader said they will eat during the cocktail hour. He said it's a waste of money for us to pay for their dinners and they're not there as guests. It's also not a good idea to be performing on a full stomach during the middle of the reception.

I also have a 10-piece band and am paying for them to eat. My hall only charges my half price for vendors, but my vendors do require it. It's in my contract.
