Vendors...

I must say that all the posts regarding tipping, house vendors, and their meals exhausted my brain. This being said I think that the "tip guide" Mark was speaking about in previous posts is insane. Even if it is used as a guideline, how can you anticipate what to tip before the actual wedding...from a first meeting or previous referrals? I do plan on tipping my vendors...as long as they preform the tasks they have been hired to do. My fiance is definetely a good tipper, and I plan to leave that to him, but to premeditate what a vendor should be tipped before they preform their services, makes no sense. Also I thought that the owner of a company (photo, dj...) isn't suppossed to be tipped?

I think we should tip if we want, and how much we want.

salt in the wound

doesn't anyone find it curious that the halls can give their house vendors free meals, but not "outside" vendors?

Just curious...and stirring the pot a bit ;0)

It's Called Kick-Back

"Yes, it makes sense to tip before hand, except if you don't tip enough or not at all) they might not do such a great job. If they are expecting a tip after they work, than naturally they will do a great job because they want you to notice + give them as much as they think they deserve"

I guess since they supposedly get a kick back from the house vendor, that covers their meal (well, more than covers!)! Caterers should be more generous with their vendor discounts, being that if vendors do eat, they are surely not eating as a guest would. PLUS they are not drinking!! I guess its just 'one of those things' about the wedding business.

Thanks Kate. I don't think any of us should apologize for our postings, even though there may be a difference of opinions. :)

"....but to premeditate what a vendor should be tipped before they preform their services, makes no sense."

To some of us it does make sense. Just as we have all gotten ideas on what is an industry standard for every other expense for this event, some of us also want to know what is customary (not expected) if someone does a good job. For example, if I do a good job at work, it is customary at my job for me to get a certain percentage of my salary in the form of a bonus. Based upon my peformance, I get a certain percentage up to a cap. Same logic applies here - for those of us who have asked..

I agree - give what you can...and what you can give/feed should be considered when planning your event.....

Karen, please do not take my post personally. I understand your analogy and I absolutely agree that it is good to get an idea of what to tip vendors...especially since for most of us this whole wedding planning is a first. It is definetely wise to find out what is customary, whether for budgeting or just to know. I was simply stating we plan to take care of amounts when all is said and done.

Good luck to you this Saturday..and keep us posted (no pun intended :)
