when i went to italy with my friend in 2000 i booked all our hotels on http://www.hoteldiscount.com/index.html
we were happy with all of the hotels, they were clean but not fancy and very inexpensive. I can't remember where we stayed but i agree that 2 days in venice is enough.
what cruise are you taking? I'm looking at Costa which leaves from Venice June 2nd - I'm actually hoping to book it today!
We're taking Royal Carribean Splendour. The cruise is from May 3-10 so we figured we'd fly out around April 29.
It's going to be interesting with the time change, i'm not really good with those things. Everyone tells me I need to make sure to stay awake as soon as we get in but knowing myself, it might not be possible.

Thanks that'd DEFINETELY more reasonable.I almost . when I saw RC prices. I have to figure out where we need to be for the cruise also since we want it to be convenient.
I figured i'd also take a look at tripadvisor
That hotel was awesome. Ask for a room off the garden in the back. I liked it b/c that is where FH asked me to marry him. Or you can request a room overlooking the canal....
Def do the gondola, its expensive but totally worth it. Def go to the square... and Murano glass is a must. I only bought stuff from the actual factory. A lot of places say Murano but its not real.
Oh and I'd skip the shopping. I was all about Gucci and Prada but the prices werent much cheaper over there and by the time you actually calculated the price back to USD it was more expensive... . Damn EURO.....

Honestly, that might be too much time in Venice..... you might get bored! I'd look into flying out on the 30th, at night, then you can sleep on the plane..... and have most of the 1st, and the 2nd for Venice.

Re: Venice?
If you fly out on the evening of the 4/29 you wont get to venice until the morning of 4/30. The flight is like 9 hours to Rome then an hour from Rome to Venice. And then i think Italy is like 12 hours ahead of here....
I left on A friday night at like 6pm and I got to Venice at 8am on Saturday.... Adjusting to the time is easy going you just sleep going. Coming home is hard b/c you are ready to pass out and its only 6pm....

We're not big on the shopping so we'd probably pass on most of the big names anyway.
Thanks for the heads up about the glass! I wouldn't know if you didn't mention, we'll definetely check out the factory.
RC has excursions with gondola rides, I wonder if thats worth it?

Re: Venice?
Gondola ride was awesome. We saw Robert Dinero coming out of a hotel while we were on our ride. Me. FH, FMIL & FFIL went on one together and I think it was like 150 EUR for the 4 of us....
I wish I had pics but when we were in Rome FH was fooling around with my camera and accidentally erased all my pics from Venice, Pisa, and Florence... I was not happy about that at all...

I was in Europe a few years ago and i really don't remember the trip there. I think I ended up taking a nap when we got to the hotel in Paris. I musta been ok since I don't remember LOL.
Coming home however, I think i slept 24 hours straight I was soooooo exhausted.
I usually have a hard time sleeping on planes though.

For me, it was much worse adjusting when I got back. I got there, and had no problems (although, I slept on the plane.)

The excursion says $94 ea and it included a couple of other things as well. It says Murano Glassworks, San Giorgio & Gondola Ride. Approximate Duration: 4 hours 30 minutes
The gondola ride would probably be with 6 others but still.

Looking at what I've seen I think I might want to go to Verona for the day as well. That would give us something to do at least.
