Venice?

Venice?

Has anyone been?

Can you recommend things to do and more importantly, we're looking for places to stay that are reasonably priced. Unfortunately I've learned that its gonna be extremely expensive.

Our HM cruise in May leaves from Venice so we figured we'd leave a couple of days early to get used to the time difference.

I have been - I have no recommendations, I don't remember where we stayed, only that is was off of the island, and we took a ferry over. (That in itself might be something worth looking into, and cheaper).

But, it was by far my favorite part of Italy. I loved it so much. There isn't much to do, more than a day or two, so I wouldn't go more than 2 days before the cruise. It's something you can basically get done in a day.

we're considering a cruise that leave from venice too and I was thinking of going a little earlier to just hang out there before it leaves. Check with the cruise company because I saw that our line actually can set up nights in a local hotel of your star-rating choice. HTH

I saw that the cruise line has places but it looks like they are all $500-$700/ night.
Then again I was told that a 'decent' hotel was at least $300.

Re: Venice?

I love Venice it really is such a romantic city.

I was there about 7 years ago so I can't say that where I stayed is still there..
We stayed at Hotel Diana. It was right off St.Mark's square down one of the little side streets. Nothing fancy but clean and reasonably priced.

As of things to do there really isn't much. As far as I remember we walked around looked at the shops, watched some glass blowing (I think that was in Venice) oh and we took the ferry over to the beach and of course you can go on a Gondala ride.

You really can do it in a day or so. I was there as part of a back packing trip with my two girlfriends so we weren't looking for the 'couple' things to do.

HTH

YES! I forgot to add about the glass - definitely go to the glass blowing factory(ies) - can't remember if there was more than one. That was great.

I don't think I bought any glass - BUT - from what I remember, at the store, in the factory, you mail it right from there. You just buy it, and they mail it to you. I could be wrong, but, I think this is the case. It's also VERY expensive!

LOL everything is expensive out there. Thats the problem we're seeing. But its TOTALLY worth it!!!

It'll be worth every penny.

As for designer stuff - if you're into getting anything - check the prices here before you go - sometimes you can get a great deal, and then sometimes it's the same price here. Gucci had a half of sale while we were there, about half of the store was half off. It was fabulous.

Dayum I just looked at RC website to see hotels they were suggesting. They're $750 and $903 a night.

I'm gonna look to see what they are on their own for curiousity sake.

I went in June , it is where we got engaged

I stayed at the Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal. It was very very nice and I dont think it was too expensive. Maybe 250 a night max... ill see if i can find you some information.

I was there for three days. I went to the Murano glass factory which is absolutely awesome and i highly recommend. We also went to St Marcos Square and we went to the Church and walked around and shopped. I would suggest Harrys Bar for lunch, they are known for there bellinis....

We also went to Florence, Rome, Pisa, Sorrento, Capri and Amalfi so if you need any other info let me know.

when i went to italy with my friend in 2000 i booked all our hotels on
http://www.hoteldiscount.com/index.html

we were happy with all of the hotels, they were clean but not fancy and very inexpensive. I can't remember where we stayed but i agree that 2 days in venice is enough.

what cruise are you taking? I'm looking at Costa which leaves from Venice June 2nd - I'm actually hoping to book it today!

omg its the most romantic city i've ever been to! just amazing...

I went with school for a few days several years ago, and i was sad that i had no one to share it with... its so wonderful

deff do the gondola...its beautiful!
I went to the island of lace, that was nice...and there is an island of glass too and u can see them blow the glass....

i would go there for my honeymoon but i had already been there..i want to go somewhere we both havent been.

of course make sure u go to the square (i think its st. marco's square -that might be milan thought.lol) and have lunch there... the church is beautiful too!

I went - stayed off the island and took a ferry over. . .much cheaper! .i LOVED Venice.

I would defintely do a gondola ride, go look at St. Mark's (even if you aren't Catholic), and go to the glass blowing. There are so many great little restaurants in the back streets right by st. mark's square.

But a heads up, they won't let you in the church if your knees or shoulders aren't covered. So long skirts or pants or long capris and no tank tops!
