Would your venue write the letter? If you feel comfortable enough with your banquet manager, or someone else at your venue (bridal attendant? sales team?), it's worth asking them. I don't think your photog is gonna show up the day of and call you on it.

Why does he need a letter from the venue?
You should ask if you could get your deposit back if he finds another bride for that date or atleast split it 50/50 with you since your date is so far ahead that he will still have time to book someone else.

Does it say in the contract it is non refundable? Because if it doesn't than you can absolutely receive your deposit back. Did you pay cash or put the deposit on a CC?
