Vent: Anyone have any friends that are totally against marriage?
I have one friend who actually says it all the time. We'd get into more fights over it if i didn't always back down from the situation but she totally is against marriage and pretty much talks about how weddings are so expensive and unneccessary. That you don't need the church or a piece of paper to show the world your love. And that when you get married you lose your identity!!!!! How do you even stay friends with someone like that? Yes weddings are expensive and you don't need a piece of paper to show the world your love but i mean show some happiness just because i'm happy!!

An EX- BM felt that way or at least that's what she claimed, when I tried discussing an issue w/ her.

Completely nuts!!! The men on my FI's side have a bad track record with marriages and I'm sure they have told FI many times... 'why dont you just live together'
I can only imagine how hard it is to deal with a 'friend' who isnt as supportive of you and your decisions as you would like! I had a friend who was totally against a decision I had made and it really bothered me that she couldn't be supportive in the least bit. We stayed friends a lil while longer, but over time I just realized that her and her negativity wasnt worth having in my life
Its times like these when you find out who your true friends are!

My sister used to tell me that all the time. SHe would say things like 'You are going to lose your independence and just become some baby making factory'. But all of sudden her boyfriend asks her to move in with her and she's talking about marriage and now its a different story. Maybe she's just jealous! Its true that its not only about the wedding, but who the heck is she to make you feel like you have to back down! But I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion...

The people I have met that are somewhat or totally anti-marriage tend to be people that are unhappy with their lives. It seems as if they are envious, not anti-marriage. These people are the type though that can never be happy for others...I'm sure glad I'm not a miserable person!

People like that, who THROW their opinions at you and tell you how pointless and waste of money weddings are.....should have to shampoo my dog's hairy assss! if you want to spend $100K on a wedding and they want to be unwed for the rest of their lives---who cares! no need to tell me that i'm 'wasting my money' (my brother is one of those types. )
what gets me is this, they are alllll against marriage and everything--but when it comes down to it, when they need it in the future...that's when it becomes important. when you are young, you don't realize the importance of that 'piece of paper'
for example--unless you have already set up a stype of medical power of attorney (which most ppl do NOT do), if something happens to your BF/GF and a medical decision needs to be made...yeah guess what? You CAN'T do it. only a 'family member' or next of kin is allowed.
how about benefits of Social Security? No one thinks about that until you are older cause we are young and think we live forever. well when you have been with your SO for decades and one day, they pass on, yeah you are NOT entitled to any SS benefits that would normally go to a spouse--cause the Federal govt. doesn't recongize common-law or 'domestic' partnerships. (i've seen this happen to a family member, she was with her man for 45 years, and they depended on BOTH their SS checks after retirement) when he died, she was entitled to ZERO benefit, cause they never made it legal.
the list goes on and on, but i just hate that those who think its just a 'piece of paper' are ignorant sluts!

Re: Vent: Anyone have any friends that are totally against marriage?
not only do I have a friend who has knocked every choice we made ( kids at the reception, candy buffet, dress choice , recepion hall etc...) but actually told FH that he shouldnt be marrying me because i have kids...and invited herself to be a bridesmaid.....needless to say she really isnt a friend and FH dosent even want her at the wedding ....its amazing the true colors you see in people when something good happens for you and not them ,,,,,envy is horrible

UGH i cant stand people who think that others should live the same life as they do and make the same decisions. They like to put things down that others do and dont sit there and just accept someone for who they are, get over it how much someone spends on anything or what they dont spend.

Now, the problem I have with that is the fact that she's arguing with you about it...Just because she feels a certain way about marriage doesn't mean everyone else has to too! I don't understand why people are so bullyish (if that's a word) and immature that they have to argue with people that don't have the same beliefs as them...to each their own, people should be entitled to their own beliefs and respect that others have their own beliefs too and leave it at that...
