Vent: Anyone have any friends that are totally against marriage?

Original post by Rissespieces

I have one friend who actually says it all the time. We'd get into more fights over it if i didn't always back down from the situation but she totally is against marriage and pretty much talks about how weddings are so expensive and unneccessary. That you don't need the church or a piece of paper to show the world your love. And that when you get married you lose your identity!!!!! How do you even stay friends with someone like that?
Yes weddings are expensive and you don't need a piece of paper to show the world your love but i mean show some happiness just because i'm happy!!

BTW we'll all be laughing at those people 20 years from now when we're all happy and proved them wrong.

Hmm. I'm sorry your friend isn't happy for you and supporting your choices. She appears to be expressing her opinion in a pretty rude way.

She may truly believe what she says and those beliefs may not be rooted in jealousy. How about saying to her, 'I understand you disagree with my choices, but I'm very happy with them. When you badmouth them, I feel hurt.' You know, a good heart to heart talk.

I'm sort of intrigued by this situation, because if it were me, I would try to engage her in an 'agree to disagree' philosophical discussion about her views on marriage. That would mean that the other person would have to be equally respectful of differing views and unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case here. GL.

I will try that next time if it comes up but right now i'm not going to approach her about the situation. Still a litle heated over it. Thanks for the advice
