vent: FSIL's wedding

vent: FSIL's wedding

so FSIL is getting remarried. she and her FH live in boston, but both family are on long island. nevertheless, they decided to have the reception at a swanky place on the harbor in the heart of boston. here are the things that are annoying me:

*she's dragging both families up to boston for a weekend-long event that's costing several thousand dollars all told in hotel and travel costs. she's doing this in spite of the fact that her mother has her hands full with the care of her 90 year-old, senile grandmother who can't really travel and needs a full-time PCA.

*she's insisting that we stay at a $250/night hotel because she wants to have a brunch on monday, the day after the wedding. why do we need a brunch? are 3 parties really necessary to celebrate your second marriage? couldn't we stay at a cheaper hotel and DRIVE to your brunch?

*she had a shower even tho she did the whole lavish wedding thing back in the 80s when it was her first go around. she has a house filled with fancy dishes and ethan allen furniture. she only registered at crate & barrel and williams sonoma, so her stuff is super expensive. she got pissed at people who didn't make the out-of-town trip to her shower 3 weeks before the OOT wedding.

*we have to book TWO nights of hotel instead of one because she's also having a big RD that she's insisting the entire family attend.

*she has thrown about 19 tantrums via various phone calls and has instigated fighting and stress all throughout FH's family.

*her wedding is costing me my gown deposit.

thanks for reading. i obviously have to suck it up, pay the money, and go. i just can't vent to the people in my life bc it starts trouble.

Ugh - that is ridiculous. What would she do if you just booked at another hotel nearby. Just say you made a reservation that is non-refundable. (actually i can IMAGINE what she will say) It does seem a little much.

Why is it costing you your gown deposit?

the extra cash that i set aside to order my gown while we make all of our payments on our own wedding that we're financing ourselves now has to go toward gas, tolls, hotel, and a check for the envelope. we won't even be able to cover our plate bc her place is .

Regarding the expensive hotel -- I went to friend's wedding om the other coast and we booked a cheap hotel down the road from their expensive hotel. At the last minute they decided they wanted everyone in the same hotel, and they reimbursed us the difference between the hotel we wanted to stay at and the more expensive place. Is there any way to offer this up as a compromise?

I would book a cheaper hotel and tell her you will drive to whatever event she is having at that other hotel. She will have to get over it!

that's awful about your dress. .well you should book your wedding at a flea bag hotel for her and tell her it is important for you that she is there.. I'm just kidding, I know that would be petty but. .that is so selfish of her for something that doesn't matter. . I specifically chose a reasonable hotel bc I know all my friends are BROKE

Holy crap. I think it's ridiculous to go ape$hit over your second marriage- IMO.

I would have made an excuse to come up for the wedding only and skipped the brunch and explain that I am not a Hilton that could afford such a lavish hotel stay because of my own wedding planning expenses. That's just me though.

On a side note, if you can't get out of this because this is FH's family and this is important to them, just enjoy it and make a nice weekend out of it. I am sure it won't be that bad aside from the draining of funds.

Yes, I agree though- much too selfish. Some people really need to think of others but they don't.

Very selfish. I'd put my foot down and stay where you want to stay. Screw her. I probably wouldn't even go to rd if she's acting like this!
But look at the bright side she does live all the way in boston so at least you don't have to put up with her sh*t here!!! I wouldn't answer the phone!!!!!

I think its real selfish of her to insist you stay at a certain hotel, to be honest I would stay at the cheaper one and just drive there even if she doesnt like it.

Re: vent: FSIL's wedding

Sounds like she's being VERY selfish and inconsiderate, you're right, you do have to suck it up and go, but you don't have to like it, you don't even have to like her!!! I think it's insane to ask people to stay 2 NIGHTS at such an expensive place, not to mention travel expenses and gifts, with the state of the economy, she should be happy people are even going!!!!!!!!! Don't worry, you'll get through it, I'm sorry you have to spend your dress deposit money on someone who is obviously not going to appreciate it! Good luck!

Yikes, sounds miserable. Sorry you're going through this. It'll probably make you an even nicer bride though, thinking of all the things you'd never put people through.

unreal, honestly... i know shes ur sister in law but, it seems like she is going to make this wedding a piece of work

Just relax though... I know its easier said than done, but maybe things will work out? Maybe she's trying to fix what i'm guessing her first marriage broke?

Alot of times the tantrums from people like that are proof that she is trying too hard to make everything perfect. But you have your own wedding to worry about now...
