VENT: long sorry

VENT: long sorry

First, I want to say that I am sooo grateful that my parents are helping us with the wedding. They are paying for the RH and my dress. My mom and dad saved for mine and my sister wedding and again I appreciate it soooo much.

I know my parents would offer to pay for it all, but we both felt uncomfortable with that. I am very independent and have been working and living on my own since I was 22. I had a job at 13/14, and I just like to be independent and pay for my own things.

So I told my parents, we want to pay for everything else. The RH is a HUGE chunk and that would help us sooo much, and I'm very thankful.

Ok, so now here is the problem.

I have been researching photographers. I really liked TP and spoke to him on the phone. At the CLM tasting, my dad and I spoke to him. My dad told me he would pay. I said no. He told me not to give my credit card to Tom the next day when I called to set everything up. Well, I called the next day and gave my credit card info because I didn't want my dad to pay.

My dad texted me later one that he knows a photographer that can give me the exact package but 1000 cheaper. I called and told him I already set it up.

He yelled at me for not listening to him. He said don't ask for his input again (but I didn't ask for his input to begin with), and to pay for everything myself. He hurt my feelings and of course I was crying about it yesterday. My mom said he had my best intentions (which I know), but he goes about it the wrong way,

He should have told me he had another photographer that night.

It's like everything I research and like, he says there is something better. When we fell in love with CLM, the first thing he says to me is that he went to Land's End and loves it there. And he went on and on about having the wedding there (after we already picked CLM).

Am i being overly sensitive and a baby?

I feel like he was wrong for yelling at me and flipping out.

i totally see your point... when you told him you were going to pay for it and he told you not to give your cc to TP you were under the impression that he was going to pay for it...

he should have just said hold off for a little while i know such and such photog...

I understand that he wanted to surprise you also... but he definitely shouldnt have made you feel bad about it...

besides you never know if you would even like the photog he chose

Welcome to wedding planning! I think this is the first time though that I've heard about a dad being like this b/c normally it's the mom's.

I agree with your mom, he had great intensions just went about it the wrong way. I'm 100% sure he didn't mean what he said and was just said it in the heat of battle (i'm sure the first of many unfortunately).

I don't think your being a baby or overreacting at all. It's kind of comes with the territory.

That's exactly how I felt. He seemed like he was going to pay for TP the next day!!! If he would have said wait until you see this one guy, I would have looked. GRRR

Thank you. This is why people elope

I def see your point

I get that he was trying to surprise you, but he shouldn't be mad at you for it. Maybe talk to him and gently explain that you do want input, but you have to know what exactly the input is in order to appreciate it.

Not to get off the topic of why u are upset..
but the bright side is.....

U will be very happy that you picked TP

By only advice- is if you want SPECIFIC shots with people..provide him with a list- cause the day off..you will have too much going on to try and remember if you took pics with everyone you wanted to

To me, photography is a biggie. It isn't just about price. Photographers have different styles and you obviously like his style.

Your dad wants to pay for it? You could let him. But he'd still be paying for the photographer YOU WANT.

This isn't his day. Paying for stuff doesn't make it so.

I'm not saying this is what you're saying - I'm just pointing out that sometimes parents forget that offering to help pay for things doesn't entitle them to making decisions ultimately. They can offer input but its your day.

Give it some time. He'll calm down. Don't take it personally ...

Talking through this with your father is the most important thing! Its obvious you are close and he will understand after you explain your side (that you said here, how thankful you are, etc. but that you want TP)...I'm sure he's just going to say that he just wanted to the best for you and to be involved--you are VERY lucky that your dad wants to be so involved! My dad would if he could, he just has NO IDEA about anything.

Good luck and you are NOT being a baby!

This is exactly what I told my mom and she agrees. Thank you for your input and understanding. Just making sure I wasn't being a baby about it.

Thank you! You're right I have to talk to him.
