Vent: My nail-clipping co-worker is driving me to drink
It's his birthday. So of course someone brought him a balloon and some jelly beans as a gift. OK - it was nice and thoughtful. But he makes SUCH A BIG DEAL about it. 'OOOOOHHHH WOW A BALLOON!!!!'
And everyone he talks to on the phone, any attorney that calls up and says 'hi how are you' he says 'great - it's my birthday!' hello we are not 3 year olds. It's cute maybe the first time but not every time. Then of course the person on the other line says happy birthday (which is normal I know) and obviously asks what he plans on doing for his birthday. Well I swear he goes into this long story about what he's doing from tonight through the entire weekend. I'm sorry but we work in a busy firm - the atty's are being polite they don't have time to hear your social calendar!!
But the best part is hearing him say out loud 'oh look someone sent me a card! Wow they have such nice handwriting!' and 'oh how nice so and so sent me an electronic birthday card!'
I mean OK it's your birthday. And I said happy birthday - I'm not outwardly mean to this guy because I just don't want to start anything with him. But CUT IT OUT ALREADY - you're not a 3 year old. Yes I love my birthday too but I don't feel the need to make it the topic of discussion with everyone I encounter. And even if I did, I wouldn't go on and on about it. I think he's either attention deprived or just very full of himself.
Sorry just had to vent!!!

Does he clip his nails at his desk? Because that is just gross. And he does sound sort of juvenile.

Oh yes he does! Gross huh? And to look at him he looks normal as anything. Totally tricked me in his interview (I helped interview him). I thought he would be a great addition to our department. Little did I know. He does these weird things like as soon as you are ready to leave he goes 'Oh Marrrrrrrrrry' because he is 'stumped' and can't find information on something. Hello do you NOT see me with my coat on or ready to leave? We all have set hours and he constantly does this - not to me for the most part but to another co-worker. Meanwhile there are 5 other people still working that he can ask. I swear I think he does it on purpose to piss us off. He moans and groans and sighs when he can't find something. He leaves things for me to do in the morning when I come in (he works the afternoon/evening shift) when he really can do them himself - he just has a hissy fit if anything keeps him past 8:01pm. And heaven forbid if someone is using the printer when HE needs it or using something when HE wants to use it. He can't handle multi-tasking and that's part of our job description. Won't answer the phone if he's doing something else.
I know I should be more tolerant. But he just isn't the kind of guy that should be working with a team. He can't handle it.
And I'm beginning to lose it. I know I'm going to tell him off very soon if he doesn't stop.

Personally, I would have to kill him. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
Can you move your desk somewhere away from him? Could you tell your boss of his incredibly unsanitary habit that is pushing you over the edge?

We all think he's weird but I guess I am the only one that really gets pushed to the limit. As for telling my boss, I don't know...I guess becasue it's a hygenic issue it's embarassing for me to even tell her? I mean it's not like he's cutting them in my face. Plus I should be grown up enough to tell him myself to stop. But I'm too embarassed to - plus I know I will either 1) start laughing or 2) take the damn clippers and threaten to clip his ear or something!!! LOL
(no I wouldn't really do that but the thought has crossed my mind!!!)

Sorry , I know you frustrated, Mary and I'm not laughing at your expense. Its just the way you wrote it.. its funny to read (though I'm sure annoying as hell) I have to agree with Wendy, I'd have to kill him.. what a child
The whole birthday thing is highly unprofessional and downright pathetic.. it would grate on my nerves. And the nail clipping ? well EEEUW that just makes me sick I do believe there should be a way to get him to stop that , it IS unsanitary!
People do that all the time on Metro North, and I swear it skeeves me. Bleeech.

If your boss is a female, I'm thinking she'll be in agreement with how DISGUSTING it is! But more importantly, that it is inappropriate to do out on the floor where everyone sits ...

That's what I mean, I know I've been on the subway and people have done it but either they are gonna get off or I am at some point. I hate being at work as it is, I would not be able to handle hearing someone going to town with the nail clipper at anytime while I'm sitting here trying to post on LIW, wait I mean, trying to do work!!!

I don't blame you for being annoyed - I would be too! And the nail clipping thing; arrrrghhh!!! I HATE when people clip their nails in public places! I used to work with a guy who clipped his nails at work almost every day! He must've been obsessive compulsive because your nails just don't grow that fast!

Awhhhh I feel bad for the guy. Sounds like he's lonely, desperate for attention or rides the little yellow bus to work (one of the three I suppose). Add a little cluelessness in there to boot.
I have an attention monger here at work too and it can get tedious. I don't think he's aware that his actions are probably pissing the snot out of everyone. Hopefully he'll OD on cake tonight and that will be the end of that!
