VENT - The $30K Dress..

Original post by FlowerBride

sorry if this is long - to get the full effect of my story it needs to be told in order...

a few weeks after i got engaged i was flying to mexico with FH and reading martha stewart weddings. i turn the page and passed a RIVINI ad. i kept flipping. a moment later the picture registered in my head and i flipped back to the ad.

there i saw it in all of its glory,

it instantly became my #1 'i have to try it on' dress.
no other dress compared.

soo fast forward to about a month ago. i call kleinfelds to make my appointment. they ask me what im looking for. i tell them i NEED to try on RIVINI's Kobe gown. they transfer me to Lee who says shell call me back and let me know. a few hours later i get the call, she says its all set and the dress should be in for my appointment.

fast forward again to last monday, 4 days before my appointment. i get a voicemail, its lee. she says that although they were able to get the dress in, the designer needed it back for a show, so unfortunatly it would not be in for my appt. im kinda bummed but its my first real dress shopping so i dont let it get me down. i go to my appt and enjoyed it but didnt find 'the one.'

so two days ago i call kleinfelds to make another appt and re-request the dress. they say they are transfering me to lee, but a man answers, who says his name is angel. i tell him i was working with lee on a dress and he says that shes no longer with the company. so i say OK then you can help me.
i tell him about the RIVINI gown and request it, and two other gowns before scheduling my next appointment. he puts me on hold. when he comes back he says 'i know why the RIVINI wasnt here. they dont send that dress out, you have to work directly with the designer if you are interested in that dress.'
so of course i say 'why would they do that? don't they want people to be able to see samples and buy this dress?'
to which he says, 'oh its common for companys to do this when the dress is worth over $30,000.'

why would they advertise this dress??
just to break my heart??
ok this whole wedding i have oddly been attracted to things that are more expensive than i anticipated.
but this one takes the cake!!

thanks for listening. i KNOW you will all understand..

Funny story!!!

Did you maybe try having someone make a knockoff of that dress for you?

The dress is gorgeous-but 30,000!!!!!!! That's almost our entire wedding. Maybe we'll end up seeing it on Platinum weddings. I'm sorry you got burned. They should have told you when you originally called about the price of the dress.

Such a baeutiful, dress, maybe you can have it custom made by a seamstress for less money. They work well from pictures.

What about bringing the pic to a dressmaker and having a replica made?

First off, I've definitely seen other dresses very similar to that one for much less - I think somebody already mentioned the Maggie Sottero version, which is pretty darn similar, although not exactly the same.

Second, I don't even look at gowns in magazines, or any kind of clothing in magazines, because it's very often ridiculously expensive. I mean, they want you to spend a lot of money, right? So they hook you on the expensive stuff asap!

It's crappy, but it's almost always like that, in any kind of fashion magazines - and wedding fashions are the most opulent of them all.

Re: VENT - The $30K Dress..

hehe thanks for all of the support - i knew the LIW girls would understand..

SO..now i need your help:

1. can someone link me to the 'similar' maggie?? i cant find it.

2. Please FM or post dressmaker recommendations. Preferably ones that have been known to do 'inspired by designers' (knock off) type work.

In honesty having a dress custom made makes me nervous cause you dont get to see it oon you til its done at which point if its not how you thought it would be when you put it on - your kinda screwed cause you already paid to have it made. so im hoping after another trip or two i will find 'the one.' but if i dont a dressmaker is my next stop!!

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about having your dress made. It's really an incredible experience. I'm having mine made and I haven't regretted it once.

I just wanted to say - also you should go try on some dresses, not just go by what you see in magazines. I think a lot of girls here will tell you that they fell in love with dresses in magazines and then went to try them on and didn't like them at all. Go try some stuff on, you might fall in love all over again!

Re: VENT - The $30K Dress..

that is truly outragous...
it did however, remind me of an 'essence of australia' dress that I fell in love with early on...(much more reanably priced, i believe its below 1500)..

That's nuts. Hopefully you find something you LOVE or maybe even something similar. As beautiful as that dress is, that's a total rip off...even if you are a billionaire. If I told my husband I wanted to spend $30k on a dress I'll wear once.... Designers and the fashion world need to get a grip!

I'm sorry - that is definitely not right that they advertise the dress that most of us can not afford!
