I moved out to Michigan to join FH and the MARKET S@*KS!!!!! So far I was two jobs with good companies - I was offered a job with American Express which I turned down because I had to bring in 150 clients in the first year and for other reasons - and the fact that I would have to wait 4 months and do testing (5 different tests - series 7, 69, various state exams and insurance exams)
SO after many being told over and over I'm over qualified for many jobs or I don't have enough experience for the ones I am not overqualified for I am soooo frustrated. Right now I am willing to take anything to get some money coming in to pay for some wedding expenses (we are living on some of my savings and FH's law school loans).
Wednesday I get a call from AFLAC (I applied months ago to the local office) head of HR - who tells me that my resume was forwarded to him and he is blown away by it and wants to have me come in and wants to offer me a position.
Well the kicker - IT IS 80 miles away - so it would mean 160 mile drive each day on highway at 70 miles an hour (there is NO train or public transportation I can take)- FH and my family says NO way I can take it especially with all the snow and accidents on the route I would have to take (50 car pile ups in bad weather are NOT unusual -since people out here CAN'T drive they tailgate doing 80mph, and NEVER signal).
So I tell them that I would really like to be considered if something opens up in their local office - and he says well honestly they are laying people off out there so there won't be anything soon.
we even considered moving to a halfway point - since there are a lot of jobs in the detroit area but unfortunately betweent the capital and suburbs of detroit is basically farmland!
I'm sorry about the job situation...do you still have the opportunity at Aflac? at least to interview and network?
maybe you can work it out that they will pay for a hotel room in bad weather...
maybe you guys will find another place closer?
I would give it a shot...the worst thing that comes of it is that you drove 160 miles for an interview

Re: Very frustrated with jobs - Vent
with FH in school here we really can't move right now - I will be going to an interview with the local office next week - but as they told me they will not be hiring out here anytime in the near future.
It is very frustrating to me because back in NY I always got every job I applied for and I send out and apply to 1-5 jobs a day and the few that I do hear from say OH we LOVE your resume but...either OVER quaified - or don't have the 3 -5 years experience they are looking for - even the temp agencies out here have me on a list BUT have basically told me I don't have 3-5 years in ONE office and no one will want to train me so basically I am out of luck - and the problem is I am willing to start AT THE BOTTOM just to work - but they say well you have a JD so you won't stay or you are WAY to qualified of the position so I don't even get the interview.

I'm sorry to hear this! The job market is crazy now. Interviewers are being supercompetitive. What I don't understand is when they say you are overqualified. You would think they would want someone who is highly educated and with experience. Since the job market is so bad, its not like the person is going to bail on the job quickly.

Christine, you are bringing back such awful memories for me. I was not so long ago in your position - overqualified and underqualified for all the jobs that were available. I never had trouble getting a job and always went on one interview and that was it - I was hired. Looking for a job as a lawyer in this market, which is actually better than it was a year and a half go, if you can imagine (although not much better), was the most depressing experience of my life. I would send out resume after resume after resume and rarely get a call for an interview. The ones I did, either I didn't want, or they didn't want me. I got into such a deep depression that FH would come home and I would be laying on the couch, staring into space with tears streaming down my face without even realizing it, unable to even acknowledge that he was there. Severely depressed. You have GOT to hang in there and know that it will get better. If you are still looking for a law job, I strongly suggest looking into public interest - it will give you the best experience you could possibly get at this stage in your career, and there is always a demand for public interest lawyers. Too few people are willing to do it.
It's just a suggestion - one that I wouldn't take for the longest time when I was looking, and when I finally decided that I couldn't handle being unemployed anymore and that anything was better than nothing, I made the best decision of my life. Sure, the money sucks, but it's actually comparable to the market for private firms (not the huge firms that you have to be in the top 5% of your class to get into), and the benefits far surpass private firms.
Just my $0.02.

Christine, hang in there! It's not much better around here... I hadnt had an interview in many months, but within the last week, Ive had three. FM me with your e-mail address, the type of job you are looking for, and your preferred geographic location, and I'll forward you any postings I come across. Good Luck!

Hi Christine:
I am so sorry you are going through this! Have you looked for jobs at Rob's school? There are some really good jobs at universities. It may not be in your field - but you could get some other kinds of experience (marketing, writing). Is he at U Mich, Ann Arbor? You could be the admin director at one of their research depts.
