I think if you search the newlywed board there was a long thread about this a few months back.

Re: Viacord? umbilical cord blood storage???
I remember when Claud was pregnant and I saw a flyer about this. I had never heard of this before. It got me thinking about it. I sorta feel like you are waiting for your child to have a horrible illness in a way. But I understand why people do it, but I don't think it will be for me. I would donate the blood if it could help another baby though.

no not waiting for something bad to happen...
but planning whatever steps we can to AVOID it.One major factor in all my decisions while pregant was that I found out at the age of 25- 5 years after both of my parents died- that I was adopted.@!!!
imagine that - STAGGERING...actually it is pretty unimagineable. all I know is that I was born in Ft Worth TX and that TX seals all adoption records.
so, I cannot offer any medical history to ANY DR that I see.
So we are looking into this option.
Any one else have any information to share?

In your case I can see why you are being very cautious! That must have been an awful shock and very difficult for you to learn 25 years later. I hope that you are dealing with it okay. I doubt I would deal with that news very well.

Re: Viacord? umbilical cord blood storage???
Dh and I used Cryo-Cell to store DS cord blood. It was the least expensive and offers the same services as all the others. One thing you need to know that it will not be usable for that child for certain diseases. ie - god forbid DS got some kind of cancer I could not use his cord blood to help him as his stem cells would be infected. I would have to use the blood of a healthy sibling and vice versa for that sibling. So you need to do some serious research before you buy this. I think it is a worth it, but you need to look into it before you go ahead with it.

the news...
was a HUGE shock. I am still trying to work out some of this...made a bit more difficult since all my older cousins ...and all aunts and uncles KNEW. No one told me,,,even after mom and dad died.It was a very wierd situation that caused me to question my moms DOB ...and how come she waited until she was 53 to have her first child...when she was married at 42? Was I her first? were there other miscarriages? or was she married before and had kids I dont know about.
btw- I also uncovered that YES she was married b4 my dad! and she had a civil annulement.
Wierd stuff- I do not need to watch soap operas- my life is one!

Re: the news...
Phyl, that must have been very hard news to hear. Im sure your parents had good intentions in mind for not telling you. I know of a few 'old fashioned' families that did not want to tell their adopted child, ever. I think its wrong, but it seems like their way of thinking. Im sure you can still do some sort of search, if you are interested in researching it.
Dont resent your parents for not telling you, Im sure they just wanted you to know that you were loved, cared for, and a special part of their lives.
As far as the viacord, I didnt do it, because I heard it was very expensive
Lemme run, little one is hungry !

thanks anna
It was hard and still is. Harder yet since they are not around for me to ask ?s ...not that I love them any less. And right after this 'discovery' seems that my family started pulling away more and more...all the while with smiles on their faces and sweet words in their mouths.
Sorry I seem to wind up on this hurtful point from time to time.
I guess being pregnant also heightens my desire to be close to everyone...harder still when my mom isn't here to hold my hand...or give me bad advice.

Phyl, dont feel bad that you bring up this issue. It's totally understandable thats its a very hurtful thing for you. Thats what we're here for. To listen and help out in any way we can. and yes pregnancy brings up all sorts of emotions, so all the more reason for you to be able to vent here about anything.Have you tried speaking to any family members about it ?
