Videographer Rant!

Videographer Rant!

Just got a rough cut of my video in the mail the other day.
We watched it once and were happy for the most part. However when watching the cocktail hour part it looked like it was just still photos from our photographer set to music- like a photo montage- I was really confused.
Two days later the videographer calls and asks if I noticed anything odd about the video and I said what do you mean, what do you think is odd about it. He then tells me that when he got home from the wedding and loaded the footage onto his computer he realized that none of the cocktail hour footage go recorded. So he decided to get some pictures from the photographer and use those as an alternative. He has known for 2 months that my cocktail hour would be missing and never told me. He even mailed us the dvd without even preparing us for what we would see. He said when he called he was hoping we hadnt watched it yet. He said he would compensate us if we wanted him to. When I asked him what he thought would be fair, he said he didnt know and would leave it up to us to propose something to him and then I guess he says yes or no or tries to negotiate with us. We paid $3000 for video (not cheap at all in my opinion). My video was probably the most important vendor for me- it was more important than my pictures. I trusted him and have raved about him many times on this website and now I feel extremely let down. I understand mistakes happen but to know about the mistake and not own up to immediately makes me even more angry.
On a total side note, I thought some of the transitions were choppy and when I asked if he watches the whole video before he sends it out he said no, that he is watching as he edits and doesnt have time to watch the video when he is done. How do you not watch your almost finished product before sending it to a client. I now need to watch it and write down every little thing that looks wrong or off to me and tell him so he can go back and re-look at it.
Sorry this is so long! Thanks for 'listening'. What do you think I should ask for in terms of compensation for this error?

that is very annoying, and even more annoying that he knew for so long and didnt tell you. I would say that you want half of your money back. Since the final product was crapp and he missed the first hour of your wedding.

It seems like he just half azzed his way through the post production part so for you to pay all that money is crazy when he only did half of his job. the worst he can say is no, but at least you have a jumping off point

AND REMEMBER TO GET ALLLLLLL OF THIS NEGOTIATING IN WRITING so he cant retract his promises.

I am so sorry.

I would say $1000-$1500 for missing a decent chunk of your wedding.

Even if he didn't miss the CH, and you didn't like the video transitions- would you have been able to get money back? I think you really can only get reimbursed for CH...

Buut, if I were him I would say that he would give about $500 back to you.

But seriously, how does a professional vieographer forget to hit record?

I would prob divide 3000 by the amount of hrs he was there and get 2-2.5 hrs back in $ he knows he screwed up

i wld def ask for a min of $1,000 considering CH is a huge part of the wedding, and the part where usually every1 is saying hi to one another and what not so i wld expect a decent amt back for missing it!!!
