So my fiance and I are thinking of hiring a film student to film our wedding. My thoughts are that after the first year or two, you never sit down to watch the video again. Also, the film student let us know that we would receive not only the edited version, but all the raw footage so if later on we want to have it professional done we could.
Anyone have any experience with this?

I don't have experience with that, but if your video is not that big of a deal to you, give it a go. He might do a better job then some of the professionals out there just b/c he'll put more time into perfecting it so he can make a name for himself.

Re: Videographers
I believe it's a good deal but on top of that, it's more of what I need.
I don't need a seamless video with smooth editing. I've sat though only 2 wedding videos in my life, and both I was the best man. Even though I was extremely close with the parties involved, they were snoozers. I figure you will watch the video a few times when you get it, force some friends and family down to watch it, and then won't break it out again until you have kids so they can laugh at you. I believe I'll get more mileage out of the photo album.
If they do a good job, I will not only let them use me as a reference, but use the video as marketing material.

I think it's a great idea! I've been a videographer in a few weddings for friends. And I think you have a great idea!!!! And raw footage rocks!!!!

I think it is a great idea!! I might be a little biased since FH is now an promos editor, but when he was in film school he filmed and edited two weddings! I saw go for it! Have you seen any of his work (school projects?)? If he will give you the raw footage, you can always have it done again! Good Luck!

I was a film major in college and worked as a professional videographer... I worked for a DJ/Videography company. With VERY few exceptions, all of the weddings were filmed and edited by college students. I really don't remember any complaints ever about quality. I think you'll be fine.
You'd be surprised, not many videographers went to school for this stuff...

I can't offer any suggestions or help, but I think that's a great idea.
