Violence against Sikhs in my neighborhood(need advice)

So, a new house was recently built on my block and it's being used as a Sikh temple (i don't know if it's called a temple, but its a house of worship). Sunday morning they had services from 7:30am on and they were chanting and playing music very loudly. I'm a ways down the block from them, so it didn't wake me, but it woek up a lot of the people who lived closer. This one guy on my block responded by taking out his car and BLASTING rock music. He sees it as 'resistance.' I agree with him that something has to be done about the volume at the temple early in the morning because it is a residential block, but I don't agree with his aggressive tactics. I told him I felt that what he was doing was wrong and that there had to be peaceful channels. he said he tried other things (which I doubt) and he asked me what he should do about their music. I asked him what i could do about HIS music, which was VERY loud, and he was really obnoxious. He has a hateful attitude in general. I called 311 and they said the police would be over and they never came.

later that day, someone told me several cars near the temple had windos shot at with b.b guns..

Now on the news today we saw a report of an older Sikh man in his 60's or 70's who was brutally beaten not far from my house. I'm really getting afraid. I was really pissed at the guy with the car radio because although he has a point and their muic was inappropriately loud, I felt he was being very disrespectful by drowning out and disturbing their religious service, and the rest of the block. He wouldn't have behaved this way if they were white and christian, I'm sure. Where can I go toa ddress this? The local police preceitn never ever responds to calls. They say they're coming and never show up. I think if it happens again this sunday I'll call 911 straight away. I don't want it to escalate into violence and I don't want these Sikhs to feel unwelcome in my beighborhood because the people on my block are @$$holes. Should I write to the councilman, maybe and see if they cna get police presence here early in the morning to prevent anything?

i have to tell you, but they only like people to use 911 for what they perceive to be 'real' emergenices, which means you can only call if actual violence breaks out. They'll tell you to call 311

A letter to the councilman would be a start, but you'd have to follow up and even then, who knows.

I would suggest makeing a few phone calls to the local politicians to see if they can do anything.
That would scare me as well - I hate violence, especially violence of that sort....

That's a really scary situation. You're right to want to do something before it becomes even more violent and explosive.

I agree with Palebride -- try calling local politicians (a phone call demands a much more immediate response than a letter).

Don's right about the 911 thing -- even though it seems like you don't have a choice other than trying it, and even though it's frustrating that 311 garners no response, if you call 911, I fear that the police will get annoyed and therefore LESS likely to respond to you. Of course, if you witness a beating or some other form of violence, calling 911 is fine and appropriate.

You might want to consider visiting your local precinct and speak with their Community Officers, they may be able to point you in the right diretion.

I am not sure of the neighborhood that you are in, but most in the NYC jurisdiction have 'hate crime' units....maybe if you ask to speak with an officer of rank in that particular unit you will get further.
