vote for your favorite flooring

vote for your favorite flooring

our kitchen and LR are one big room...(well the kitchen has a built in pantry separating it from the LR - but I plan to knock this down)

I thought about putting a half wall up to break it up...or I could leave it open...

heres the question...it has awful linoleum (kitch) and dirty carpet (LR) - which I will tear up...but what should I put down? the LR has a slope in it...so doing hardwood floors myself is out of the question...but I may be able to do tiles myself...plus we get them very cheap from Mexico

1. kitchen - tile -- LR - hardwood floor
2. kitchen and LR - tile
3. kitchen and LR - hardwood
4. kitchen - tile -- LR - carpet
5. kitchen - hardwood -- LR carpet
6. other...tell me what you think...

I voted one because i love the look of tile in the kitchen, but personally I am not a big fan of it. Lokks wise yes, but function wise no.

I am so scared that once you drop something on a tile floor you will break it, and I am clumbsy. Or then the tile would break.

You can't put tile on a sloped floor ... the subfloor needs to be even and solid otherwise tiles will crack ... it needs a steady enviornment to sit on. Best bet is to shore up the floor and make it even before doing anything.

I didn't vote, becuase I like two options ...
#1 Tile in Kitchen, hardwood in living room
#2 Hardwood throughout

Oh, another option for ceramic tile if you are afraid of the seeing the red clay from 'chipping' is getting a white-bodied tile - it shows less chips. They are still there, just don't show up as much as red.
A porcelain tile that goes through & through - if it chips you wouldn't even notice it
Or granite or marble (although marble is very porus and can stain easily)

jan...DH and I were hping that we could even out the floor ourselves...if we tiled...

but I think it would be easier to get a pro in...just hope it doesn't cost too much...

you'd have to even out the floor, can you do that yourself? IF you can, come over to my place, I have a bedroom floor that needs it too LOL. I see what you are saying but I think it'll be very hard to do on your own though. I'd get a professional opinion and then make a decision.

I voted for other

A few IF's here:

If you take the wall and keep the rooms open I would go with one flooring, probably a pergo type

If you put a divider and there is a clear division I would go with Tile and hardwood.

If its going to be too expensive to fix the LR slope I would just do carpet for now and tile in the kitchen.

no pergo...we have it in our kitchen now...and i see it warping up a bit...I know they make them better now...but its in my head as bad...

I would love to do this in the kitchen...and then it gives you a sense of a boundary...but not sure it would go with my french bistro/wine theme...

Erica, I don't know if I can discribe this but I will try...Our LR and Kitchen are one big room I put diagonal tiles in the LR then I made a boarder out of the same tiles (we got them small) then after the boarder at the bigging of the kitchen we turned the tiles regular (not diagonal). I get a lot of compliants everyone this it is really cool the way we use the same tiles so the room looks really big and still seperated the rooms.

We did this in our dining room instead of putting rug down.

Re: vote for your favorite flooring

thanks cooky...I definitely want to do something with tile...at least in the kitchen

how do you like tile in the LR? do you put down area rugs? is it cold?

Re: vote for your favorite flooring

We put down a big area rug between the sectional and the TV. We have Radiant heating so it is not cold. I love the look with the tile in both rooms, I think since they are one big room if I would have different tile or carpet it would have made the rooms look like to seperate rooms instead of one big open airy room. Tomorrow I will see if I can take a picture of the way we seperated the rooms with tile.
