I am a little confused as to how the 2nd set of book to read were selected I feel like I did not have a say as in which book was chosen. It does not seem as if a book or an author that I like will ever be selected or ever get in the running.

Please let me know what the rules are for a book to get on the list. I am open to other people's choices but I want others to read some of what I am interested in as well. Don't we all get a vote on this?? I need to know how the decision is being made on this???

In the thread 'Poll for Book #2' Sonicstef took the first five suggestions given by anyone, and those are what are in the poll.

Shamma,

Maybe the books choosen were more appealing to more people. Im not sure what books that you posted about but sometimes books are geared towards certian people and dont appeal to the masses. Personally , I will read all sorts of books to expand my horizons.

for instance, I love historical novels, like the John Jakes series but I know that those books do not interest people very much.

Maybe for the next book (after this round that we are voting on), 5 peoples names can be picked (at ramdom) and they can suggest 5 books abd that is what we will vote on. Do you like that idea better?

I hope that this will not discourage you from reading that books that are choosen.

Lisa, I love John Jakes! I have read so many of his books.

I agree with Shamma that more input from everyone should be taken into consideration. By the time I got around to thinking about the next book, the five choices were already set in stone. Maybe we can just add a few more selections. If we pick the first five that are mentioned than only the first few people who post about it really have any say.

But, it wont be the end of the world if I bow out of reading a book here and there. I am not sure if I want to go near Topping from Below becuase it sounds like American Pyscho and that book was enough to turn me off from the S&M books.

Shamma, maybe you and I can pick something else to read next month

huh - well every new plan has kinks in the beginning! At any rate we will be reading SOMETHING and that is the ultimate point! To bend our minds a little and escape from the mundane!

The only thing I can think of is maybe have liweddings pick 5 names from our storyboard at random and have those 5 girls choose a book each that will go to stef's voting board? I am sure we can trust them to do that!

Other options? Maybe alphabetical groupings? Like all the girls that start with 'a' choose? I am sure we will come up w. something.....

Becky that is so great to hear that another woman loves John Jakes. I just bought a new book (not sure if new for him) called 'On Secret Service' that is my next book. I will let youknwo how is was!

Shamma: As someone said above, I took the first selection from the first 5 girls that were paperback. There were MANY MANY MANY books suggested on numerous threads and I didnt want to be the one who subjectively chose which ones were included so I thought taking the first suggests (which took several days to accumalate) would be most democratic. Its not perfect but it was the best I could come up with at the time.

After we have chosen this one, I'll do the same thing (post another thread and get 5 more selections) unless we all agree on another method. I dont really care how the selections get chosen but
I think more than 5 is too many IMO. (posting these 5 links and creating the poll takes more than enough time)

The point is - there is always a next book to read so you will definitely get your chance.

What do you think?

Perhaps to address Shamma's concern, the next five suggestions should come from different people then made a suggestion this month? That way more people have a chance for their book of choice to be considered, without adding too much complication!

That sounds like a good idea. No problem doing that for next time but to be 100% honest, I dont want to have to keep a database of who HAS suggested and HAS not suggested for the rest of the book club future since that would get sort of cumbersome after book 4 or 5. I'll do my best in the next few polls but after that I think we are going to have to wipe the slate clean and start over again. Is that fair?

Thank you for the FYI about 'Topping' That is EXACTLY what I thought when I read the review. I was so disturbed by American Psycho! Now if 'Topping' wins I will read it. I was thinking I would skip the next round if it won!
