Kris: Dont worry... I absolutely hated American Psycho but really liked Topping. In Topping there is some stuff where youjust think 'wow - this is sick!' but thats only a very small portion. Topping actually has a storyline and a character you can follow and care about. American Psycho was just a big 'what?' for me - hated the writing style, character, storyline, everything.

I feel fine about the way things will be handled the next time around. THanks all for the clarification.

Re: Vote Now: What shall we read next?

I am really glad to hear that a new method of choosing the selections was decided. This was an issue I raised in the suggestion thread. The selections were chosen so fast that many people who are participating in bookclub did not get opportunity to participate. However, I feel much better in the new method, and I applaud you ladies for coming up with a more inclusive method.

Happy reading ladies

Stefanie: you did a wonderful job with the poll. Thank you.

Re: Vote Now: What shall we read next?

Stef - I think that is the perfect solution. If we just rotate the people choosing the selections then everyone gets a say. Totally agree that you should not have to keep track of whose turn it is. You certainly have done enough putting together the poll. That is way beyond my computer sophistication, but I would be happy to help out in any other way.

Maybe I wil give Topping a try. I am usually open to any book becuase I really enjoy reading. But American Pyscho was just craziness. If I could ever leave a book unread, I would have stopped that one after a few chapters. I'll take your word for it that they are very different.

Re: Vote Now: What shall we read next?

So far we have only had 29 votes...how many book club members are there?

That # seems about right - I would imagine not everyone has enough free time to participate in each book.

Stef, I just replied to the poll... Keep the poll open for a little while, this board is slow, and thus I don't check it as regularly as others. Perhaps a few more days...

I also suggest giving more time to brainstorm on choosing the final 5 suggestions.

Re: Vote Now: What shall we read next?

Im keeping the poll open - i just wanted to encourage everyone to participate.

As far as the first 5 are concerned, if anyone else would like to be responsible for the collection and selection of suggestions I would gladly be rid of that duty. I thought I was being helpful by putting up an automatic poll so no one had to manually count suggestions on a very long wordy thread. Personally I think the 5 selections we have now respresent quite a range of tastes and types of books and Im sure future selections will continue to expand the horizon.

The original post was put up and the selections were collected quickly (2-3 days time) so I didnt have to spend a great deal of time sorting through a long thread - keeping that open for longer would have negated the benefit of having an automatic poll in the first place.

But if most people prefer to revert back to that method and someone wants to volunteer to do the manual count, I will take down the poll entirely.

As I said, I was only trying to be helpful by putting the automatic poll and the links to the amazon reviews. Just tell me what you want me to do and I will do it.

Re: Vote Now: What shall we read next?

Stef I really apprecaite your help doing this. There are lots of different types of books included in the poll so everyone should be able to vote.
There is NO easy way to chose which books to put on the poll. One way I thought of was to just pick a type of book, then everyone could suggest books within that type. That might help narrow down the ideas.
But no matter, I still think it is great that you took so much time to put this all together.

Re: Vote Now: What shall we read next?

Stef, no prob with the poll at all. I actually like the poll. My only concern was the book choices always coming from the same people. That has now been resolved so all is well. Thanks for all your efforts

Re: Vote Now: What shall we read next?

Stef: We appreciate your hard work. We just needed to find a better way of choosing the selection, and we have. Your poll rocks girl. I wish I had the talent to do something like that.
So thank you again

Re: Vote Now: What shall we read next?

Perhaps I'm thinking too hard, but I'm curious. Is this the primary or the full election? As in, if no book has 51% are we doing a run off or taking the one in the lead?

I think I may just be making this complicated, but its a interesting question considering the 11 votes on the bottom 3 could swing the resulting choice! hehe

Re: Vote Now: What shall we read next?

I assumed we are going with majority vote but your idea is interesting.

If you want to do a run off then we need to choose a finish date for this poll so I can set up another poll with just the top 2 choices.
