For girls who have or who are planning on using a votive candles as your placecards - did you light them or do you plan to light before guests pick them up?
I think it looks beautiful to have all of them lit together on the table before people pick them up, but my mom's worried it will be hard to see the names and that someone will burn them self or drop the candle on the way to the table. Any thoughts? Anyone seen this done w/o problems?
Thanks!

Re: votive candle placecards question
ask your rh first, many dont allow this. They'll allow candles on the tables but not the candle placecards where guests are walking around with them

Yes, I will def check. But I'm pretty sure it's allowed since I got the idea from another LIW bride who had her wedding at my RH.

Re: votive candle placecards question
Usually the candles just tell the guests what table they are at and the guest doesn't take it with them until they are blown out. I have seen a past bride use a picture frame with a cute poem saying to leave the candle there until it has cooled and come back for it later. I will try to find it.

Personally, I wouldn't light them. I'm just imagining all the things that can go wrong. Also, some RH's have policies about this...check with yours before you do anything. They may be prettier lit, BUT they're safer unlit.

I plan on doing them as well. I was thinking of having my RH set them right outside the doors going into the room so they pick them up and go straight to the table instead of in the cocktail hour room where they usually put them.

Yes, I think that's where mine would be set. But the short transit still worries my mom. ...
Thanks for the responses. I'm thinking over the blowing them out idea..
basically asks people to leave the candles in place until later.

There is one other idea I had -- I want to test it out and should do it soon because I don't think it would have the same effect, but I was going to try those battery operate little tealight candles.

Re: votive candle placecards question
That's a great idea, but it may be a little pricey. I just checked out AC Moore, and they have a 4-pack for $10.49!
Maybe if you get aloooot of coupons, it could work. There also has to be someplace online that has them cheaper.
But it really would solve all your safety concerns, and it would work as a great, practical favor, too!
Let us know how things go! I'm also very interested in doing the votive placeholders.

Re: votive candle placecards question
I am using tea lights in the votive holders and lighting them right before so they don't get too hot.

Re: votive candle placecards question
I think I am just going to have them lit right before guests go into the ballroom. Seems like the best option. I guess it's a bit unsafe but I think it's worth it.
Also, just a tidbit of advice on buying them/keeping costs down. I emailed the store I'm going to buying from asking for a bulk discount and they gave me 20% off. Still expensive, but better than nothing!

I've done a bit more web searching and found a few deals online:
