Wainscotting?

Anyone do this, I love the look but unsure if I can do it myself or what? Anyone do it?

My girlfriend did it herself and it looks amazing. Just go to Home Depot or Lowe's - they were really helpful (according to her).

Good luck!!!!

never did it...but it doesn't look too hard...I think crown molding is harder

Re: Wainscotting?

We did it in our dining room and in our office room. It was easy in one, harder in the other.

The office room we did oak wainscotting and it came in individual slats that we polyurethaned individually, front and back, before putting on so that it wouldn't warp. Installation is easy, basically its tongue and groove together and fits in a base molding has a chair rail to cap it off.

The other room we did we bought the white, primed wainscotting that was about a foor wide each board, as opposed to individual slats. We put it up and then painted it. Here's a picture I have of the dining room - it was almost finished, but you get the picture:

I'll try and find a picture of the oak - it looks so much better.

Re: Wainscotting?

thanks girls and wow chemglr that looks amazing good job!

I just replaced the base moldings though in my livingroomin a polyurethane natural wood color but I love the white look, think this means I will have to rip out my new moldings??

Yes, there are special base and chair-rail moldings specifically for the wainscotting. With the white we put up, the moldings were really plain too (I can't tell if you can see that in teh picture). We found much fancier moldings for the oak wainscotting we put up (I'll try and post pics tonight).

We have it but it was already there. All I can say is that it is a great look!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the look too. But, DH has been researching the installation of it, and it's not as super easy as it seems. The right way to install is to cut out the sheetrock behind where the wainscotting will be placed and add a plywood buffer (drilled into the studs)...then you nail the wainscotting into the plywood - this allows for the natural expansion and contraction of wood due to temperature/humidity changes.

I have it in my bathroom. My Father did it. He bought it alread put together at Home Depot all he had to do was cut it to fit the bathroom. I love it!

Re: Wainscotting?

When we moved in our house, it was done in the half bath and we both loved the look. This past summer we remodeled our full bath (it was still the original bathroom with ugly blue tiles) and also did the white wainscotting in there. It really wasn't that difficult to do and really looks great. We are planning on doing it in our entry way/ mudroom this summer to replace some old tile and old wood paneling.
