So I went to the dentist today because I thought I had a cavity. Turns out my gums are recessing because I brush my teeth too hard (who knew?). Anyway, I asked him about teeth whitening.
He said that if you have gum problems and get your teeth whitened, you will be crying and in a ton of PAIN!!! He said absolutely don't do it. I was really happy to have gone because I was ready to get it done!!!

My dentist said the same thing about my receding gums! I use Crest Whitestrips Premium anyway.. if my gums get sensitive I don't do it for a day. You get the same results according to the directions.
And yes, my teeth are really white now- I have the strips in as i'm typing!

The dentist was referring to professional whitening not over the counter. My problem is going to require a dental procedure called desensitization or something.

I agree about the sensativity. Thee was some slight/minute discomfort but I knew that would happen since I have a tooth taken out of my gum years ago and it never healed right..but mostly i feel tingling. Mind u I have to have anesthesia for a cleaning.

If you have sensative teeth, do try sensodyne tooth past. I found it helped it a lot, and still use it when my teeth feel sensative to hot or cold. Good stuff.

I agree!!!!!!!!! I was told recently that I have the same (recessed gum line). About 3 years ago a got the teeth whitening kit from a former dentist which was a few hundred dollars. I used it the first time (I think it's for a week every night). I was fine that time and noticed a difference (nothing too dramatic though). The second time I used it (a little while later) it hurt a bit more. I started using it every other night and eventually stopped. The third time (beofre my wedding) I tried it AGAIN and this time, I'm not kidding, it hurt so badly. I couldn't even breathe with my mouth open without it absolutely KILLING me. I gave the rest of the gel in my kit to my old roommate (who was doing the same thing).
