on a debate team or in a debate club in high school/college?
What was that like? What kinds of things were debated? How were those things chosen?

I was on the debate team in HS. In LI, we were in the Catholic league (I went to a public school, but that was the league). So we didn't get into too many religious issues, but we debated politics and philosphy mostly. Lots of current events. College was another story- we debated everying from the death penalty and abortion to peace in the middle east, etc...

But how did it work? You would meet up (say once a week) and a topic would be posed and you'd just debate amongst yourselves? Or in competitions or what?
