was this a faux pas?

was this a faux pas?

We were debating on whether to invite FH's brother, his BM, to the wedding with a guest since he doenst have a steady girlfriend (more like 7 at a time). we asked FBIL what he thought and he said that he'd rather bring his guy friend as his date! this is someone who FH was friends with in the past but they lost contact when he moved away. he's now moved back to ny but they dont hang out, so we had decided not to invite him. now FBIL wants to invite him as his guest so we said no way!
was that wrong?

Personally, I'd let him bring whoever, better a real friend than the flavor of the week IMHO! BUT, why does he really need this guy there? His brother and all his family are going to be there, it's unnecessary. I would tell him that it's okay if he REALLY wants to, but just to think about it before he makes his final choice.
ETA: But I don't think you're wrong though! It's your choice!

I think that regardless of who they bring, people in the bridal party have to be invited with 'and guest.'

If you invite someone with a guest, they are entitled to bring whomever they so choose.

well our standard throughout this process has been if you are not in a serious relationship, you arent invited with a guest. we extended this to him too even though he is a BM.
