I was on the phone with my DJ company yesterday to confirm everything and at the end of the conversation, he 'reminds' me that my 15% tip should be put in a seperate envelope from the balance when I go pay the DJ. He also reminds me that the 15% is off the TOTAL amount I paid them, not just 15% of the balance still remaining. Mind you, I looked over my contract and NO WHERE on the contract does it say i have to give them a 15% tip..it just says 'Gratuities are greatly appreciated' at the bottom.
ok, so 15% of what Im paying them is $225! Plus I am paying for both the DJ and the MCs meal!
Does anyone else think this was rude of him to say and just assume I am tipping and tipping them that much? How much should I be tipping, if at all??

I've read that if they OWN the company, you should not have to tip them. If they DON'T own it, then just $50 a person! $225 sounds rediculous!!! WOW! Are you getting the owners?? They're getting all the money, so it's really not even necessary! If the DJ is the owner, then you should just have to tip the MC! Hope it works out for you!

Totally rude. Tips are OPTIONAL.
If you want to give a 15% tip, you split that amount between the DJ and MC. They don't EACH get 15%.
Never tip anyone more than you can afford or more than they deserve -- and don't tip any individual (maitre'd excepted!) more than $150.
I think giving them each $100 would be more than generous.

No, neither the DJ or the MC are the owners.

I think that was very rude! How did you respond to him? I think I would have been in a stunned silence. It is almost like he is trying to bully or guilt you into giving him a big tip.
Give what you feel he deserves and that's it. at this point, he'd be losing points in my book

I didnt even get a chance to respond because he threw this in at the very end of our conversation. I was ready to say bye and hang up and he was like..oh, one more thing!....then he was like, that's it! We'll see you Sunday!
So I didnt get a chance to say anything! When he hung up i was speachless and stunned...like..did he just say that?!

very rude...tips are given when you get good service, if you choose to give them.
I wouldn't give 15% at his point, i'd be a little peeved. I'd also write a little note in the envelope explaining why they didn't get the 15%. But that is just me being a stickler.

Yeah, very RUDE! I read somewhere guides to tipping and for DJ it's $50 pp.
OK I found it... http://www.liweddings.com/planning/articles/article.aspx?ID=558 $50 per person for a DJ.

That is rude!
Tips are optional and are given based on service.

I think that's a great idea! Just a little list ...'Why I don't feel you deserved 15%'

Re: Was this a rude comment from DJ?
that was beyond RUDE.
i'd probably be a biiitch and put a piece of paper in a an envelope and give it to them at the end of the nite and write
'Here's a tip, next time don't ASK for a tip, just receive it graciously'
i seriously would call up the owner of the company and let them know that the DJ said this to you, i'm sure the owner would not appreciate his employees trying to force a tip on his clients!

Yes that's extremely rude. Since when is tipping mandatory?!!! I'd be pissed. Seriously 15% is way too much to tip the DJ and the MC. If they do a good job, I'd say give them $50 each (since they're not the owners). They should feel lucky to be getting any tip at all!!!!!!!!

Wow, definitely rude. I feel like these vendors and their tipping 'rules' have gotten out of control. A tip should never be mandatory and should never be asked for. I think this guy needs a litte etiquette 101. I would give whatever you feel is right...and based on the service you receive at your wedding.

Wow, I think that's rude and if it isn't state in the contract what you should give then that's totally up to you.
The tip should be given after they've done their job. This way if they f-it up, you can deduct it before you give it to them.

Re: Was this a rude comment from DJ?
I wouldn't take it too personal. I used to work with DJ companies and most of them do say that but it is 'OPTIONAL.' Don't feel pressured into giving them a tip if you do not want to!

That is obnoxious and $225 would be way too much for a tip!
