I USE TO WEAR THE PATCH AND STOPPED WHEN I NOTICED BRUISES AND BLOD CLOT SPOTS ON MY LEG ABOVE AND BELOW THE ORTHO EVRA PATCH.....I GET VERY CONCERNED WHEN I SEE THESE ARTICLE......WHAT IS GOING ON?

'Recently this past week, my cousin Nicole Dishuk (age
31...newly grad student with a doctoral degree about to start her new
career as a Doctor...) was flown into a nearby hospital, (She lives in
Penn. ) because she passed out.

They found a blot clot in her neck, and immediately took her by
helicopter to the ER to operate. by the time they removed the right
half
of her skull to relieve the pressure on her brain, the clot had spread
to her brain causing severe damage.

Since last Wednesday night, she was battling.. they induced her
into a coma to stop the blood flow, They operated 3 times..

Finally, they said there was nothing left that they could do..
they found multiple clots in the left side of her brain.. the swelling
wouldn't stop, and she was on life support..

She died at 4:30 yesterday. She leaves behind a
husband, and a 2 yr old Brandon and a 4yr old Justin.. The CAUSE of
DEATH - they found was a birth control she was taking that allows you
to
only have your period 3 X's a year...
They said it interrupts life's menstrual cycle, and
although it is FDA approved... shouldn't be - So to the women in my
address book - I ask you to boycott this product & deal with you rag
once a month - so you can live the rest of the months that your life
has
in store for you.

*Please send this to every woman you know - you may save
someone's life... Remember, you have a CYCLE for a reason!

Sincerely,
Jennifer Roselli '

Re: ARTICLE RE BIRTH CONTROL......

Anyone who uses birth control is at a greater risk for developing a blood clot. That is a fact. Is it a big enough risk to not take the pill? Probably not, but that's something your doctor should discuss with you before starting it. Unwanted pregnancies are also 'risky.' Birth control pills can also be quite beneficial for women with all sorts of gynecological disease. These 'pass it on' emails are so sensationalist all they do is scare people without getting the facts straight, they really make me angry

I personally was pulled off bcp's a year and a half ago due to hypercoagulative blood. My family has a genetic condition. Only my older sister and I have it, my brother and younger sister avoided the genetic jackpot. I was lucky enough not to have a stroke but I was told I was lucky. I can not use ANY hormonal birth control. I currantly use FAM (fertility awareness method) with the help of fertilityfriend.com. If done correctly it is as effective as the pill. But again IF DONE CORRECTLY.

What's the matter with the good ol' rubber? What, it's a hassle, or the guy is whining.

Let's weigh the options

whiny guy* or blood clots or other health problems.... sorry guy, I can do without

(*Must declare my FH never whined.... he's golden... )

to put it in perspective, scientifically, we're much closer to understanding cancer

My fh doesn't whine, we've used condoms for 9 years! However your question about what's wrong with just using condoms. The three trips to planned parenthood when the bastards broke is why especially this close to the wedding (the last 8 months or so) I've gone back on BC. Condoms aren't fool proof and even with perfect use they aren't as effective as BCP although I do know and personally don't like hormonal BCP either but then if you rely on things like spermacide that's not better either (have you read the studies that the WHO did with sex workers in Europe and non-9 increasing the transmission of HIV).

yeah, I hear you about the condom breakage part. The pill is also not fool proof. The problem with the pill is that some people can't keep good track of when they take it... and we all know what happens if you forget a dose... and I have no idea what would happen if you accidentally take 2... Patches also have problems with contact dermatitis issues... So far condoms work for me (I'm 35 and was never pregnant and have solely used condoms....), but obviously it's different for every person.

To me, messing with hormones is scary. There is so much medical science doesn't know. The links of the pill to various types of cancer seem to move back and forth like the tides these days. One thing I can tell you as being a medical researcher is that no matter how huge the medical study, every single one of them has major faults. Becuase of that, all pharmaceutical development and decisions are on somewhat shaky ground. Medications like aspirin, where the risks and benefits are well known are definitely in the minority. The jury is out on what the long term effects of messing with progesterone and estrogen levels are.... so I personally prefer to steer clear of all of that...

Believe me I hear you. I just got sick of having to go get emergency contraception from planned parenthood every time the condom broke (I do remember it's available w/o prescription now). I definitely don't plan to be on BC for very long and haven't been on for more than a year at a time since I don't love the side effects either. I just feel that really there aren't that many alternatives and since I really do not want to be any one's mommy for another few years I feel like the BCP is my best choice in making sure of that for now. The pill to me isn't that difficult. I take mine at the exact same time every day like clockwork. I have an alarm set on my computer so it flashes on the screen every night.

I hear you..... it's really rought when you're in a time you don't want to get prego.... who ever comes up with a hormone-free / error proof form of BC will become a billionare for sure!!!!

Hoax. What most people don't understand is that the 'period' you get when you take birth control pills isn't a period at all. You don't need it, and the only reason that most birth control is designed with the sugar pill week is to make women feel better. It was a marketing decision to let women have a 'period' on the pill, not a scientific or medical one. When the pill was first introduced, it was decided to make the pill with a week of sugar pills because they thought many women wouldn't go on the pill unless it was like that--personally, I think it was a decision made by men. I only get a period every few months myself, because of severe menstrual migraines. Doctors have been prescribing the pill without the sugar pill week for a very long time for women like me, and to women with severe endometriosis. It's not a new thing with Seasonale and the other types.

I don't understand why people write up this crap and put it on the internet. I don't blame people for passing it on, it's scary and they only want to help others. But it even sounds like a hoax to me.

I get very wary of these kinds of letters myself. I did a search and came up with nothing but it sounds like bullshiit to me as well.

LADIES - DON'T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU READ!!!! Seriously, If you don't know the person then you have nothing to go on in terms of truth. There are so many people out there that just LOVE to terrorize us. Birth control IS safe and stopping your period is NOT unhealthy for every one. There are many risks when you take ANY kind of drug and for those of you that don't HAVE to take BCP you are VERY VERY lucky. The girl that died - if she did - died from blood clots due to taking some form of BCP. That is not uncommon - well, the blood clots part.

You don't know this ladies medical history, you don't know WHAT form of BCP she was taking, you don't know what else she was taking that could have contributed to the blood clots - there is so much you DON'T know that to assume that is was just the BCP that caused the blood clots and ultimately her death is wrong.

Just be careful. Don't be so anxious to jump on every story and take it for truth. Do some investigating yourself. Do some reading and call your Dr.'s. Yes, docs do make mistakes but they have access to much more relevant and up to date information than you do. MANY MANY women take these meds. We would ALL hear about it if it was truly causing that big of a problem. Remember, people can die from all kinds of things - the body is quite complex!

I agree. Sometimes the internet can be so misleading. Dont believe everything you read. yes, it may very well be true...but Pencils stated..what is the girls medical history? What BC did she use? There are a lot of factors that need to be taken into account when reading stories like this. However, it is still scary to hear that BC can be dangerous..just be careful.

Re: ARTICLE RE BIRTH CONTROL......

I was using Ortho Evra for a little over 2 years. I was sort of a 'guinea pig' because this patch had just been released by the FDA, and here is my DR prescribing this stuff! Well I was fine, at first I even lost weight....I did notice that my patches were itching and scarring my skin. Soon after that, my headaches, dizziness and nasea returned. (Along w/ my medical condition, that was the main reason I was put on the birth control to begin with to alleviate the pain and bothersome mensis). So, I just took myself off it, I've been birth control free for a little over 1 1/2 years. Unfortunately, due to my condition, I still have headaches, back pain, dizziness and nasea, but I guess with time, that will go away .
I noticed on the news that there were many cases of heart failure, blood clots and other things. I thank God, I stopped medication when I did....However, I think I was an exception, I didn't really have any side-effects to this patch.

I think someone experienced these symtoms as well, but I don't remember which B/C they were on, you should talk to ur gyno and see if you can switch to something else.

Re: ARTICLE RE BIRTH CONTROL......

what about the stores of women who have been on BC for 10+ years, go off, bear healthy children, etc.?

I doubt the truthfullness to this story - if it is true its very sad, but not all BC is going to killyou-

the patch gives you a higher risk of blood clots because it was a constant stream of hormones 24 hours a day rather than a pill that has to go thru your digestive system - the patch goes right into your bloodstream.

and someone else posted this, and its true, that the 'period' when you are on the pill isnt a real period, since you dont ovulate on the pill, there is nothing to bleed out, the bleeding is caused by the fluxuation in horomones.

talk to your doctors about birth control decisions, not chain emails

I have a friend who was in a similar situation.... she was on BC to regulate her hormones becuase she had a medical condition which caused them to be really abnormal w/o BC. I think Depo worked for her for a while... but then began to have some bad side effects and she had to stop. She switched to something similar, and her condition just got worse and she was experiencing mood swings, nausea... horrible.....

eventually, she found some other way to treat her condition so she could get off of BC... It's a real pain to have to take BC for medical reasons.....

For all of you non-believers :

At the age of 23, after being on the patch for a month, then orth tri cyclen lo for a year...here's what happened to me.

I had not been feeling well for about a week,,,just dizzy, and not like myself..hard to explain..being that I have always had sinus trouble, I assumed that it was sinus related. Long story short: I'm in sports authority one day , actually feeling a little better...then BAM! I pass out cold....I come to, and my face, hands, arms and legs are going numb. Scarily numb. My FH had to actually carry me out to the car, then carrry me into the hospital. All this time, I'm thinking that this is how I;m gonna die..that's the way that I felt. After 4 hours in the ER, and several tests later, they could find nothing wrong with me...and sent me home. The next day, I still was not feeling right, and went to see the neurologist..long story short, I had a MINI STROKE!!! The doc thought it was most likely linked to the pill, but could not prove it...anyhow, I stopped taking it instantly, and never started again. IMO- the stuff is evil. It's a personal choice, and I personally choose not to use it. Anything unatural that you put into your body, IMO, is risky!

i have to say that to each individual its a choice.....true or not true its scarey.....i wore the patch for 8 months.....my fh started seeing the bruises first and brought them to my attention by asking me what had happen. a simple bump on the chair would cause a terrible bruise....right below the patch on my leg there were small purplelish spots, and they were above it too. there were also veins that could be seen from a distance...i would get pain in my leg from time to time.....then two weeks prior to my discontinue of the patch...a young lady passed out and died while waiting for her subway in Brooklyn...she had a clot that went to her heart and killed her. ironically she was wearing the patch and had clots and bruises on her leg......this is not BS

This email wasnt posted with the intentions to start a debate on whats real and whats not. My own personal experiences with the patch made it a concern of mine. I have a 18 yr old daughter in which I have concerns about bc and usage with her. Is she sexually active? I dont know. She tells me no and i do believe her, but i keep the lines of communication open and she witnessed what happened to me while i was on the patch.

everyone is entitled to their opinion and choices. i know now that my body is a my temple and if i dont take care of it, it wont take care of me.

Good luck with whatever decision you select and be careful too.

I had the discoloration of my skin and it was itchy and flakey too. I can even look at my leg and you can kinda see the imprint of the square...you and i may have been using it at the same time.
