Water broke from amniocentisis

Original post by Dooodles

Has anyone else had this happen or know of anyone who did and had a successful preganacy without fluid in the sac? I am just starting my 21st week of pregnancy. I had my amnio done last friday and then on Saturday afternoon, when I stood up, my water broke. DH and I rushed to the hospital where I was admitted for a week.
I am finally home from the hospital and can talk with my LIW friends again thanks to my DH who hooked me up with the laptop to talk while in bed.
The hole from the amnio which caused my water to break still has not healed and the fluid has not built back up yet. There really is nothing more they can do for us in the hospital. We are taking it week by week at this point and hopefully the hole will seal and fluid will build back up. Of course, the longer we go, the chances suck. I am staying in bed drinking to stay hydrated to reduce the risk of contractions starting or getting an infection.
We are checking into other options at other hospitals to try and find doctors who are willing to help us keep the baby and try to have a healthy baby. There are so many issues with deformities and such since I am in a very critical period for development of the lungs and brains at this stage.
My sister has found an article on a doctor at NYU who has performed surgery to repair the hole but it can be risky. We do not know at this point if it is still done since the article is from 2001 but she left a message and hopefully I will have good news this week that we can try and get that done!
I've also heard about filling the sac with fluid, but when I asked my Dr. at LIJ, they won't do it because of the added risk of infection from an outside foreign object into my body.
DH and I want to give this baby any fighting chance as the heartbeat is so healthy and our baby is still active inside.
If anyone knows of someone who had a similar experience and can point me in a direction, I would love to hear from you!
Thanks!

I wanted to lend you some support. Where is your current OB in all of this? I think it is a sin that you are researching and trying to get a doctor to help you. I would think NYU might be a great place to start. I know that things are very scary right now but you have to hold on to the fact that you can heal and your baby will be okay. Never stop looking for the doctor who can help you!!! If your current OB is not doing his/her job then find a new one. Dont give up!

Re: Water broke from amniocentisis

I found a few things for you....

------------------------------
I had preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) in three pregnancies, so I have experience with this issue. This is a problem to take very seriously. There is a high probability you are leaking amniotic fluid and that this is not due to a vaginal infection (even if your nitrazine test strips come back negative, which happened to me). I would recommend immediately doing the following:
(a) have an *abdominal* ultrasound (nothing should go in the vagina because infection could be introduced) and have the tech check on your cervical length and Amniotic Fluid Index (AFI) and give you the results. Refuse speculum exams unless absolutely necessary.

(b) go on strict bedrest - stay in bed and get up only to go to the bathroom and not to eat or anything else except doctor's appts; take measures to make sure you are not constipated; stop having sexual intercourse if you are having it. Consider raising the foot of the bed a little bit. Contact Sidelines.org, a great organization for women on bedrest.

(c) get a referral to see a perinatologist immediately, and urge him/her to give you a cerclage if there is any possibility you may have a dynamic cervix (looks closed at some times and shortens indicating it is opening, at other times)

(d) consider getting a home uterine activity monitor (HUAM) to check twice a day to see if you are having preterm labor. If ordered by your doctor your insurance will usually cover it.

(e) get tested for beta strep and go on ampicillin right away.

Many (perhaps most) ob/gyns are incredibly ignorant about dynamic cervix and PPROM in general, and they are not proactive enough about cerclages or referring you to a specialist (maybe because then they lose their fee). I hope none of this advice is necessary, but if it is try to keep your spirits up and remember that at 28 weeks you have reached a major milestone of probable success. I wish you the best of luck and send good wishes your way. Been there

And here is an entire organization dedicated to this type of problem
