Ways to cut costs

Original post by Mrs.Ptobe

Hey ladies...

I recently became laid off from my job unexpectedly and money has been especially tight. I had a great interview the other day and I'm hoping for the best.

FH and I are going away next weekend to discuss our wedding plans and ideas. I've been doing as much homework as I could the last few months... but I know one of FH's big concerns is about $$$. Seriously, we have a house already so I think his mindset is more on upgrading the bathroom and the kitchen rather than spending $30k on a big party. He joked earlier that we should just elope and this way we take care of the wedding and the honeymoon - scary enough he may have been partly serious.

Basically, I know that I better put on my best sales presentation ever next weekend to eliviate his mind - which is not easy to eliviate someone's concerns over $$$ when you are unemployed trying to convince them that you'll take on the bigger burden. Here is my list of things that I'm planning on telling him to either eliminate certain costs or add to our budget:

1- Tax refunds, pending I get that job and don't need mine to make my minimums on my bills. He however, should use his toward the mortgage - not the wedding.

2- Continue with my p/t job even once I'm gainfully employed again.

3- Have an informal engagement party hosted by my parent's at their house (maybe dad will slip me some extra cash since he doesn't have to pay for a catered affair - but I doubt it). I feel this way we'd register at one or 2 places but send out invitations (like the kind you buy at a hallmark store or maybe my dad can make them on his computer) and maybe we'll get some monetary gifts - or at least people will buy the non-monetary gifts for this and give us cash for the wedding.

4- Have a Friday night wedding instead of Saturday or Sunday - depending on the hall whichever day or time is cheapest.

5- DJ - get the most basic package - no bells and whistles, just introduce us, make a few announcements here and there, play what we want him to and that's about it. No smoke, no toys or any of that garbage that goes unappreciated for the most part anyway (not putting it down if anyone's doing that, but if it costs money it's not worth it to me).

6- Flowers - no floral centerpieces - use candles and make them with stuff from Michaels. Only flowers will be the bou-k's.

7- Small Bridal Party - about 3ppl each, plus maybe a ring bearer and flower girl (his son will be 9, so maybe he can be a JR. groomsman and eliminate the RB).

8- 100 guest or less - only kids are those in the BP and have an A and B list so that this way FH doesn't freak out that he can't invite some guy he went to grade school with that he hasn't spoken to in 10 years. MEN!!! Then if someone from A sends back a 'no' he can pull someone off his B list to replace them, but we stop at 100 guests.

9- Buy invitations as cheap as possible since they'll end up in the garbage anyway.

10- I'm make the 'save the date cards' somehow.

Anything else anyone can think of? I'm hoping to stay under $15k which I know is painfully hard to do, but unless I want to get married on a beach in Mexico - I'd better be prepared to show FH that we can do this somehow. The priority items to me are good food, the photographer and the videographer (and the honeymoon - FH agrees with this one). I know - videos not that necessary - but I have to admit - FH's first wedding was taped and is at his mother's house somewhere b/c some of their dead relatives were there so she can't part with it, but I have an issue with that being on tape and not ours. I know - stupid, but it's life I guess. Any other suggestions?

Hi! I think you are on a pretty good track w/ the money saving...we are doing some of the same...floating candle centerpieces w/ votives...the price difference is amazing ($13 per table...where else can you find that?) Saving on the decorations with having an outside ceremony helps too. Also what we just did is the photographer we booked is excellent...I will FM you on that. You are right on point with the DJ (again, I will FM you).

You could def do a wedding in less than $15,000. That's about what our budget is. We're getting married at Ariana Waterfall - its a beautiful place and everything is included (photo, video, dj, centerpeices, and limos). We also are doing our own flowers - paying about $400 and having flowers for 7 bridesmaid bouquets, my bouquet, and all the ceremony decorations. I got my dress at David's Bridal - but it honestly wasnt the cheapest place. I acutally paid more for my dress there than some of the ones I was interested in at other bridal salons. But David's does have some good deals (I went to the one in Queens and I was very pleased with the service). I think an important thing to keeping the prices down is keeping the guest list short. I tried to do that, but it kept getting bigger and bigger and now I am hoping people respond with a no! As far as invitations, I got mine at Rexcraft.com and they were wonderful - I paid less than $200. Hope I helped a little! Good luck!

You can have your family videotape the wedding and just pay someone to edit the footage after the wedding.

Re: Ways to cut costs

You should definitely look into having an off season wedding. Something in January or February.
Also why not look into having your reception in the afternoon. If you find a hall near a hotel, you can have a big after party their.
I am not on that tight of a budget because we are getting a lot of help from both sets of parents. Though if I was paying for the wedding myself, I would try my hardest to cut corners any where I could.

If my family agreed, I would of skipped the whole big wedding and went somewhere tropical and got married on the beach.

All these are great and I should have mentioned the following - I wish I could do a January/February wedding - but it may be kind of cold for an outdoor ceremony... I'm sort of Jewish (not religous at all) and FH is Catholic (and previously married in a church).... I'm 'not inviting religion to my wedding' so unfortunately, that will up the price a little for the outdoor ceremoney - something else for those who have done this inexpensively where your advise on keeping it cheap would be appreciated. On the other hand - I don't have to pay for a limo b/c the wedding and the recep are right after each other and at the same place. I want the pretty ambiance of oudoors (weather permitting of course) and my dress is a halter neck - kind of spring/summer/fall - I don't see it doing winter. I know it can be done, just have to use some imagination and get some great ideas from you ladies.

Also - about the video thing. I'm looking for a cheap package, I mean take a camera walk around and hand it to me at the end of the night. I dont have any guests that can or would be willing to do this, but a cheap video would be great - just something for my kids and grand kids to watch one day. I was one of those kids raised on home movies - my dad used to have the camera where there was no sound, but it was always fun to watch my parent's when they were young and me when I was a kid. It's important to me, so if you know of someone who can do this as painlessly on the wallet as possible please share or fm me. thanks a bunch - you guys came up with some great ideas - and thanks for those who FM'd me with more...

You can get the wedding locations book for free from fortunoffs in their registry section. I got the bridal bargains book for 1/2 price at overstock.com. I made my own save the date magnets on vistaprint.
When booking vendors say that you are looking for a party (family reunion-retirement etc and get a price. Then say oh well, actually my df proposed so now it is a wedding. you already have the pricing so they are stuck- and hopefully they will honor it.

For a video maybe you could go to a local college and speak to the director of their media department. School have equipment avalible to their students. You could possibly have a video student tape the ceremony and reception and give you the raw footage at the end of the night/

You've mentioned some really good ones. I did do most of these (cheapest DJ package, no centerpieces, only MOH and BM)

But I would also suggest getting married off-season. Because I got married in February, many of my vendors were willing to work with me on the price - I paid more than $50pp less than I would have had I gotten married at any other time.

FM me if you have any questions.

ETA: You might want to consider buying your dress on bridesave.com - I found mine on there for $300 cheaper than I paid in a salon.

I second the off season idea. We saved so much money on everything (except flowers....roses in February) by having our wedding 'off season'
