Ways to help children 'face-to-face' ?

My Moms Club is going to need ideas of where/what to do for our service project.

I am ALL FOR helping children or the elderly.

I know there are MANY places where toys can be dropped off for Xmas, but I think there's so much more satisfaction in seeing those precious little faces open their gifts from 'Santa'

We did this with a club in college (one of our members even dressed as Santa) and it was priceless.

Does anyone know what organizations would be willing to 'let us in' and play Santa for them? (Nassau or Suffolk County).
I plan to start doing research online next week. Im sure there are TONS of organizations that would love this... My big thing is to be with the children for a little Holiday Party and bring them cupcakes and milk, and not just dump toys off in a big black bag.

IDeas? Suggestions?

Please check some of the local battered women shelters. There are some very scared and disoriented kids that are brought in with their scared and disoriented moms who could probably use a little fun in their lives. I don't know of any offhand, but I'm sure someone else will know of some.

I think it's great that you want to actually get involved *with* the children, instead of just getting involved *for* them!

Thats a great idea Jann! Moms are also a HUGE part of who we help. Didnt mention that
So it will be kids, moms or the elderly (or maybe all three!)

Thanks for the idea. I'll look into that also.

I forgot to add...just make sure that you don't have any men in the group. I know that sounds awful, but battered women's shelters are extremely careful about who they let in, for privacy's sake. They will probably ask for a list of people you expect to be there and will do some sort of background check on them. It may seem to be more trouble than it's worth, but the protection of those moms and kids is of utmost importance.

Good luck with whatever you decide! I know it will mean a lot to whomever you help!

As a kid, our schools, Brownie troops, church groups, etc. did lots of work with St. Christopher Ottilie. I was never involved in the organizing so I don't know how to arrange the sort of project you're looking to do.

Check out St. Christoper Ottilie web site

What a wonderful idea! I admire your commitment to really get involved!!

Since you are looking for LI I would second St Christopher-- great group!!!!

as well as talk to local churches as they regularly 'sponsor' different organizations

Hmmm, I know Momma's house is for pregnant teens, maybe they know of an organization for young children as well?

Also, if you are willing to do some work with disabled children there is an AHRC in Williston Park & an ACLD in Bethpage.
