Well, DH and I took our new kitty to the vet today for her first check-up and turns out she was dehydrated, has fleas, is underweight and some other stuff. We now have to give her antibiotics and vitamins. Hopefully, as the doctor put it, she just needed a jump start. They said she was taken away from her mother too soon. The shelter told us she was six weeks when we adopted her. Well, she is only about five weeks now and we got her last week. So we had the option of keeping her and paying to fix her up, or take her back to the shelter. Well, I am too attached already, so we payed the $300 to make her better. I swear, I need to get a second job just to take care of our pets. Please pray for our little Shortcake that she gets better and lives a healthy life. I don't think we can go through with another sick cat like Miss Kitty.

When I found my beautiful Gabrielle, she was too young to be away from her mom, she was a homelss all alone kitty who was dying. I took her to the vet and they fixed her up...that was 15 years ago( July 4th is 15 years!!)!!!! YEA!!!! And knock on wood, she has had incredible health!!! I hope and pray that your new daughter will have the same luck!!!!

A similar thing happened to my friend when she bought her pomeranian. He almost died. The vet had told her that it was because she got him from a puppy-mill. (Shake-a-paw in Hicksville.....evil place). Well after some antibiotics and other meds and a bit of TLC, her dog was fine. That was about 5 years ago, and he's still doing fine.

Hang in there.. it's a kind thing you did to decide to keep the kitty.
When I was younger I got attached to a kitten who was too young. I ended up bottle feeding this kitten every 3 hours. The cat ended up being just fine.
Seems like you got your kitten into the vet on time.

awww, I'm so sorry to read about Shortcake!! I cannot believe the way these shelters operate sometimes, its really bad But with the proper care you are giving her, I just know she'll be OK .. those little kitties are pretty strong, stronger than we think sometimes!
I can imagine you are already soo attached to your new kitten, I know I would be .. there are very few kitties I would be able to turn away (I love cats!)
I hope it all works out for you .. she is lucky to have such wonderful parents who care so much about her!

Well, I love her and I am keeping her no matter what. I'll nurse her back to health. DH on the other hand is losing his patience. She will not stop pooping on the bed. We keep putting her in the litter box and scratching her paws in the litter to try and teach her, but it is not working. I woke up this morning and was cleaning poop off the bed and changing the sheets. Does anyone know how we could train her to go in the litter box. I know she will pick it up eventually, but because she had no mother to teach her, she needs some help.
I'm sorry to hear about the problems with her, but I am sure she will be fine. You will take good care of her!! As far as the litter box is concerned, I was always told you should keep them confined in a room with the litter box. Since cats are naturally clean, she should use it. Also, make sure that she can get into it without a problem. When we got Espresso, he was only five weeks old and I had to buy a little pan for him to use cuz he really couldn't get into the hooded box. After a couple of weeks I switched the litter (with some poop ) into the bigger box and he was fine ever since. He's nine months old now and no problems at all. Good luck, Men aren't good with this stuff, I know DH was crabbing all the time about Espresso in the beginning too.
