I still don't know what to think. My FH's company might wants him to move to China next August for a year to oversee a new plant thats opening up. This will be a great opportunity for him especially at only 26, and the best part is that they will pay all expenses: rent, food, transportation... so his entire salary goes into savings for a down payment on a house or to help with the wedding. The bad part is that our wedding is scheduled to happen during this year that we're going to be there. He said that he will negotiate that he needs 2 weeks off before the wedding and 2 weeks off after the wedding or he won't make the move. Do you think I could have everthing planned and just have my family help with the final touches. I guess I could always come back to the US more than just 2 weeks before. Sorry if I'm babbling, but this is a major possibility and I think it will be good, but scary. The Pacific Ocean is HUGE and China is so far from home. His VP told him that I could easily work at a school teaching English. I don't really know how that would work since I don't know how to speak Mandarin, but he said that I don't need to. So what do you think about this?

i think you should DO IT!! i went to japan last year and it was amazing... i know it's not the same as china, but that part of the world is just so amazing. i think you could really gain a lot from the experience. AND, it wouldn't be forever --- a year or 2? that's nothin! what an opportunity!!! good luck with your decision.

Re: We might be moving to CHINA!! (kind of long)
where in china would you be? i visited shanghai and beijing last year (as well as some countryside towns i can't remember the names of). my dad's cousin's wife is from china so we went to visit her family. i think it's a very difficult place to live and i'm not sure i could do it.
obviously it's a great opportunity for you and fi, but don't forget to research the country and find out about the town you'd be living in. there are many very primitive areas in china.
best of luck. if you have any questions feel free to fm me.

Good luck.
We 'lend' out our coworkers here on request of clients. One is engaged. She signed on for a two year deal and they want to keep her longer, but she said no way, she's gonna get married. If they still want her fine, but she's taking the time for her wedding.
I think it's a great oppurtunity. Try not to stress out. You could always push the wedding until he's back, just marry civil then make a big bash. Or just plan from a distance. Im sure it will all work out.

Do you know where in China you'll be moving to?
Have you ever been to China? I'm assuming your FH travels there often enough to know the culture, etc.

Re: We might be moving to CHINA!! (kind of long)
Well, it IS a once in a lifetime experience. Will you be in Hong Kong or Bejing? I think it is an awesome experience. I don't know how living in a communist country would be, but for one year I think I woud do it given the opportunity. And if they are paying for almost all your bills, then you could probably fly home maybe once or twice before the wedding to see vendors, etc. Thank god for the internet and digital cameras though - if you couldn't get home at least you could see the sample centerpieces and such. You can design the programs in Word and e-mail to family to have them print them out, etc. That sort of thing. About the gown, depending on where you got it you can talk to them and tell them your situation and work out fittings. My friend lives in the UK but is from here and got married here and she did 2 fittings in 2 weeks because of the situation. If they become pains, then find a seamstress who can work with you.
I think it's a good opportunity - you would be saving $$, it's once in a lifetime thing and it's a year - yes you will be homesick but a year goes by so quickly!
Let us know what you decide!

Where in China will you be?
I spent 6 weeks studying in China with my law school - we went to: Hong Kong Xian Xiamen (Jimeii - is where we stayed) Bejing
I had a fabulous time! We met a lot of american and british citizens who were college age and teaching english in the schools - they seemed to really like it.
I think it can be done - you can try to plan everything in advance - and then do the smaller things online - and with your families help - you could also come home more than 2 weeks in advance to do the finishing touches.
If you have any questions FM me!

I think this is a great opportunity and its only for a year. I don't see it as something for a long time but for a year it would be great. I would definetly take it.
Good Luck!

Re: We might be moving to CHINA!! (kind of long)
Opportunities like this don't come along everyday.
If I were you, I would go for it. I doubt you would regret going. But you might come to regret NOT going.
I spent a summer in China...I studied at Beijing University (English courses for us) and then I travelled the Silk Road to Kashgar (border of Afghanistan and China)
it was a fabulous experience and I would do it in a second...
Here are somethings to consider: where are you staying...are they putting you up in american/japanese/tawainese housing...if not and you are below a certain degree latitude THERE IS NO HEAT IN THE WINTER!!!
There are tons of Australians in China (for business like your DH) so there is never a lack of people to talk to ...if you are in Taiwan or Hong Kong...there will be many English speakers...
I would not pass it up...you can definitely get everything planned by the time you go...and as long as you have the internet to check LIW you'll be fine... I found an internet cafe in every rinky dink small town I went to...except one...and I was quite surprised that they do not censor it
living in China...you barely notice the communism...on the contrary you see so much of the capitalism (joint venture capitalism at least)and the people are so kind...it is the only country that I have been to that I never feared being robbed
also you can get massages for like $2 an hour!!! just be careful where you go...
I'd really be excited to talk to you about different places...especially try to get a chance to see the 3 gorge dam project...before they destroy the yangtze river

Go go go ! Just have everything planned and have the family help out. And, he doesn't need 2 weeks b/f and 2 weeks after. He may never get another opportunity like this if he turns this one down...Go!

Re: We might be moving to CHINA!! (kind of long)
Am I the only one that would be hesitant to move to China? 6 weeks or a summer is a lot different than a year! And much of it depends on where you would be moving to.
In any event, here's a website that may be helpful: Expats in China
