I tasted some cakes from Audrey's yesterday as samples. I was wondering what kinds of cakes you guys were getting and what icing. I like the look of fondant, but my FH, MOH and mom HATE the way it tastes. I'm torn...they all like the whipped cream icing. Since we're november, its possible. I just don't know how whipped cream looks as icing...or buttercream for that matter. AAHH...any pictures or suggestions?

Re: wedding cake
we felt the same way!
we didnt NOT like the taste of fondant AT ALL, as beautiful as it was... we couldn't bring ourselves to get a cake just because it was pretty!
we decided to go with buttercream frosting.. which can be sculpted to look very smooth (not as smooth as fondant, but still very smooth!)
we're doing chocolate cake with three layers of filling: 2 will be chocolate mousse, and 1 will be fresh strawberries, and it will have the buttercream frosting!

Re: wedding cake
At first I wanted a fondant cake because it looks nice but heard it tastes yuckky. I think I am going to go with buttercream, if buttercream is spread correctly it looks really smooth and it tastes great. There is a post on here or it may be on the 08 board titled 'cake help' and they talk about the same topic

Re: wedding cake
We are having yellow cake with vanilla custard and chocolate pudding with buttercream icing. Decorated with Silk Autumn Leaves. We were thinking of foundant but knew we were not big fans of it.

Re: wedding cake
I can not even tell you what an odyssey finding a cake has been for us.....we are also using Audrey's....we have tried EVERYTHING!!!! We get tasting cakes once a week!!
The fondont does look classy, but tasted weird. The buttercream looks good too, but tasted sooooooo oily and lardy to me! The whip cream is more pure white and probably tastes the best....but we are summer and cant do this.
Anyway--I think we are going for cheesecake with raspberry and fudge. It was really good.
Also, if you are getting a sqaure cake...dont bother with the fondont b/c fondont always has a rounded edge to it, so it will take away from the 'squareness'
I hope I didnt just scare you with my craziness!!

Re: wedding cake
I am in the minority, but yesterday I got my sample cake from my bakery, and I actually sort of liked the fondant. It tasted like marshmallow to me. I was expecting it to be gross, but it wasn't. We're having 4 tiers, bottom layer carrot cake, next layer cannoli, then chocolate with rasperry mousse AND chocolate mousse.

that is because it depends where you try the fondant. If you tasted the packaged rolled fondant, it is kind of nasty. There is also a marshmallow based fondant, which is probably what you had, that is a much better tasting alternative.

I didn't mind the taste of the fondant personally...I thought it was mashmallowy, but everyone else hated it. I think u just have to have a sweet tooth!

Re: wedding cake
We are doing fondant. Our baker told us that if fondant is done right and rolled really thin it is not bad tasting. It looks sooooo amazing too!!
