The popular vendors book up 1-2 years in advance. I know some of the girls getting married in 2013 have most of their vendors booked. You would also be getting 2011 prices for booking early.
I booked the big vendors 9 months in advance (DJ, florist, photo, video)
And we booked the RH 13 months in advance.

I would try to book the biggest vendors asap. You want to try and make sure you get your pick of what you want and also like the above bride said, if you book early you will get the prices for this year.
My wedding isn't until Oct 2013 and I have booked my RH already and i'm looking into photo/video now. Those are the 3 most important to me so I wanted to make sure I book early so I can get what/who I want. Plus I wanted to know what i'd be spending so I can budget accordingly. After photo/video is booked i'll take my time with everything else since I have so much time. But I honestly think its never to early.
