Interesting

I should send this all to people who keep saying 'You can't wear white you're not a virgin'

The color white has been a symbol of joyous celebration since early Roman times. At the beginning to the twentieth century, white stood for purity as well. Today, it holds it original meaning of happiness and joy.

I've read similiar things before, yet for some reason EVERYONE believes the bride wears white to symbolize she's a virgin.

lol, I have had people tell that to me, but I remind them White wasnt the color of a bride until the Victorian Age, and in Japan, white is the color of mourning, red is the color of a bride

Re: Wedding Customs and Traditions of the Past

ok, that website is wrong as to why the bride wears white. It was Queen Victoria who made white the primary color for a bride, representing chastity, it is not an ancient roman tradition going through the medieval ages. In medieval times, they wore their best dress, whether it be white or not. There is a poem about the colors

Married in gray, you'll go far away
Married in black, you'll wish yourself back
Married in brown, you'll live out of town
Married in red, you'll wish yourself dead
Married in pearl, you'll live in a whirl
Married in green, ashamed to be seen
Married in yellow, jealous of your fellow
Married in blue, he'll always be true
Married in pink, your spirits will sink
Married in white, everything's right.

White was sometimes used, but it wasn't the only color worn. It was expensive to have clothing made, so most didn't

Snopes (a guilty pleasure website of mine) explains the whole 'wearing of white'

Supposedly, it was an impractical color and Victorians wore it as a sign of wealth. Also, because it is a color associated with joy, show wearing white is showing your joy.
