wedding dress: rent or buy?

how much did you spend on your wedding dress and what label is it? or if you haven't bought it yet... how much do you expect to spend?

seems like all the dresses i like are quite pricey, and i don't care about keeping the dress so i'm considering renting.

what do you all think? good? bad?

thanks for your help!

I bought mine it was 600.00. I got it from Lilettes in Baldwin and they gave me a video that I didnt even watch but inside was a 100.00 coupon. So got the dress for 500.00 that didnt include Veil or Alterations or Tiara. I personaly wouldnt want to rent my gown. I don't know why but I would thing somewhere down the road I might be upset about not having it. I think if you don't care then go for it just as long as you know you wont care 25 years from now!

I was interested in doing this but I couldn't find any companies on the island that do this. I know I won't care if I don't have my wedding dress to own. It will save me some storage space.

One suggetion is buying a dress online. There are some sites that some would vouche for, because you save about $200-600 for ordering it online instead.

Mine was $1050. That wasn't including EVERYTHING (ie...slip, veil, shoes)

I bought it.

I bought mine, it was pricey though. I think it's up to you and how you will feel later on. I know it's a lot of money to buy a dress that you will wear for one day, but I think it is such a keepsake for later on in your life!

i have no problem renting as long as it fits properly - my mom borrowed her dress- and how many girl's actually where their mom's dress - renting is fine it is for one day

personally, i wanted to own mine, for sentimental reasons, and in case i ever wanted it for something in the future (not sure what, but just in case ), so i bought it....it was about $2000, JUST for the dress. Yes, it is expensive, but I saved the money and I was wiling to spend it so I could have my dress and keep it too.
Everyone is different though, if you want to rent, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! As the other ladies have said, though, there are really inexpensive options out there as well

It may be hard to find a place that rents dresses for you. The only people I know who have done that have rented b/c their religion puts many limitations on what the dress can look like.

Same here...I wound up buying but I didn't spent a lot of $$$$. I'm considering selling it on ebay since I don't see the need to hold on to it.

I don't understand how they can rent dresses when everyone needs different alterations? I know mine is getting about a foot taken off the bottom (I am 5'3' and it was made for an amazon woman!). What about a sample dress? The Wedding Center sells them for 1/2 price.

I have not even tried on dresses yet, but I feel the same way as you do. It doesn't matter to me if I keep the dress, my wedding is informal. Many friends have offered for me to wear their dresses, and if they fit I'm definitely going to consider it. I even considered wearing an ivory bridesmaid dress. I'm am too cheap to spend money on a dress I will wear once. Def. check out Bridesave.com and Houseofbrides.com

Well, the guy sizes are more specific--waist 32', length 32'...I have not found one dress that would be the right length for me...

I also had the same idea. After all the guys rent their tuxedos. But I've looked and i can't find anyplace on Long Island that rents bridal gowns, so i'm going to buy one.

If you can find one you love to rent.. GO FOR IT.. I don't really care about keeping my dress either. My mom has hers still, but hasn't seen it in 15 years, its in the attic. I may appreciate keeping it in 50 years, when I still have it and can show my grandkids, the style.. I'm not sure.. but i say, if you don't care about keeping it.. GO FOR IT GIRL!!!!!!!!

All the samples at the Commack Wedding Center are $99. That's probably cheaper than renting anyway, and you can alter as much as you want.

This may sounds silly, but definitely buy. I'm all about the 'bad' Kharma and have been reading tons of Feng Shui books. You definitely don't want the vibes of people before you to put a damper on your wedding day.
